Title: Chance for bridge players? Kings ashtrays or nut bowls
Post by: scavo on June 01, 2012, 09:35:39 PM
I was pleased to find these today as I wasn't supposed to be buying any glass, ceramics or anything collectable this week.

There aren't any marks on the dishes or the box.

These are the newer ones, as they are on enamelled sprayed glass rather than opal glass and 1962-74 from the box.

Thank you to you both. Do either of you happen to know if they were marketed as nibbles bowls or ashtrays?

I don't think they were marketed as anything in particular

hahaha, yeah, why would they?
Well spotted on the enameling. I didn't know earlier versions were opal glass.

An earlier boxed version (c.1957) appears in my book, as kindly noted by Mel, and this is identifiable by the diamond design to the box design being much tighter.

But there are four different styles:
  • Opal and opal-flashed (transfers applied to the front)
  • Spray enamel and clear glass (transfers applied to rear)

  • The clear ones are also known in an earlier promo photo, but were produced much later as well.

Hi David, thanks for your expert input.
I can confirm that mine are definitely transfer on the front, clear and then opal to the back.
Does this help narrow the date down?

To firm the date up, the trays were first introduced in 1955.

Now, I might have dug myself a big hole, because if the transfers were affixed to the top and bottom, this would mean having two versions of the same transfer (one a mirror-image of the other), unless they were able to slide the transfers off the sheet and use them upside-down (if you see what I mean). I feel this would be unlikely.

So it is possible that the same transfer was used on all trays and was always affixed to the top surface of the tray. Not in a position to check with all the trays I have featuring this design.

Impossible to date precisely as this pattern was used for many years, but I think yours are sprayed enamel, not flashed opal, and would therefore be a later production model.

Okay that's good enough for me. Diamonds are wider, back is enameled. Later production it is.

My info is design dates from 1955
These actual ones date from somewhere between 1962 - 74.
    Back is enameled.

Thank you again for your input. It is much appreciated.
