Title: E-bay 220057343128 Perthshire Triple overlay
Post by: Derek on December 06, 2006, 09:02:55 PM
Hi all

No doubt you have all seen this super weight - I was surprised to see it described as a triple overlay when clearly it is only a double overlay.

I didn't recognise the design so delved through the Perthshire book - no sign off it ! I then happened on the Perthshire section in Ann Metcalfes PW's of the 19th and 20th century and amazingly and to the word is the E-bay description !!!!! except that it is describing the triple overlay 1977c - which the weight on E-bay clearly is not !!!! I cannot detect any sign of the edition scratch signed on the base of the E-bay weight which is the normal practice so suspect it is a one off trial pice or frigger.

I have e-mailed the seller asking for clarification and will post the response.

Best regards

Derek

A frigger is a piece made by a glassworker that is for their own use/benefit. Allowed by the glassworks as it helped workers develop skills and supplemented their wages. Friggers were frequently sold over a beer in the local hostelry.

The auction is over - but just to answer the original query: it is "1982H" - as depicted on page 38 of the "complete guide" by Mahoney and McClanahan. I had informed the seller about it - he referred to Metcalfe and insisted that it was triple overlay >:(.

Hi all

Always happens doesn't it - you say something is not listed in a catalogue and of course as soon as you have posted you find it !!!

Yes it is a 1982H - DOUBLE overlay - suspect its something to do with the psychology arising from looking for years and always seeing the most expensive item on the bottom right rather than the top left as in this case!!

Well at least Wolf got I reply from the seller which is more than I did !!

Best regards

Derek
