Title: Garage sale find. Fox? Fawn? Rudolph? Who made it?
Post by: wrightoutlook on September 25, 2006, 02:02:52 PM
I found this wonderful glass critter at a garage sale yesterday. I paid $8 for it. I usually stick to paperweights, but this glass animal has some "paperweight" qualities within. Measuring to its longest point, it's about 10 inches; and is about 5 inches high at the tallest point. Heavy; weighs 2 pounds, 2.5 ounces.

It has a red nose and green eyes. There's an ethereal amber flash along the bottom. The amber glows within the animal just right depending on the light. At first I thought it was a fox, but then I thought fawn, deer, Rudolph. The family having the sale said it had been around for a while, but couldn't remember anything about it or when it was purchased or discovered or given or who might have passed it down.

Especially interesting is the unique body tone within. There's a spotted glass spine line with a bulbous area in the hindquarters area. The glass spine within looks like molten lava. The gold globs are definitely aventurine. On the bottom there are a couple of frosted "pad" areas that are flat for proper sitting on a table.

Does anybody have a maker ID for it? Possible year? Is there a specific maker of these animals? The images herein show various advantage points and angles on the critter, including close-ups. Thanks.

I have the same piece, only badly damaged but has the J.I. Co. Venetian Glass label.  I could not give an attribution on it.

Thanks Javier. I know about your expertise. I had a hunch it might be Muranese. I'm going to check the Murano label website to get a look at the label, if it's there. I'm sorry your critter is damaged.

Here's the label that's on Javier's piece, but not on mine.

Title: another glass critter

I was in a local antique mall late this afternoon and saw another animal of the style of manufacture as my fawn, but it was a seal with brown eyes and with the similar center lava-esque and aventurine spine. This one did have a Murano label from the same place as the one Svazzo has; and as shown in my second post above. From J.I. Co. of Italy, hand-made, Venetian. I didn't have a camera with me or I would have taken a photograph of the critter.
