Title: Bohemian Vases ID - Art Nouveau Style
Post by: David555 on May 30, 2006, 10:44:12 PM
Hi

I was given these two vases as a present today – clear crystal and raised gold enamel decoration. The main body of the vase is partitioned into four sections by glass strips that whiplash elegantly at the top, at the base of each section is added a clear glass ‘peacocks eye’ (usually these can be found on Webb & Powell with green or purple at the eye centre).

Each section acts as a panel for hand enamelling beautifully executed, showing woodland foliage and a central rose.

The base of each vase shows a lot of fine age ware and has a concave polished pontil.

The rim is gilded - I can’t find a decorator’s mark so I presume these are of good quality but not top notch.

I feel these are Bohemian c1900s and perhaps from Novy Bor / Umgebung – perhaps one of the Haida based companies that specialised in raised enamel work.

What do others think?

4.5” high, top rim 4”, base rim 3”

Hi David,

Nice vases. Good present!

At first, looking at the thumbnail images, I thought, "French".

But when I saw the larger photos, I noticed something of interest in relation to another message - "Peacock trails" :!: - and the gilding looks very good, too.

Hmmm. Could these possibly be Webb's? Input by others would be appreciated.

Kev that would be too much to hope for ..... but stranger things.

The quality is fantastic all around and I have to say without the gilding I would have said Webb, Stuart, or Powell - the peacock trailing is very like that on pieces I have attributed to the above British companies.

A piece I have attributed to Webb - for comparison

The gilding is very simple; I would expect 1900s Bohemian to be more complex from having another look at book sources.

Thanks

I think the vase linked directly above with the green prunts, on image shack is a Stuart piece.
It is the same shape as mine but mine has pale green surrounds to the eye and pale green trailed rather than clear.  I believe these came in a number of sizes.

The vase in the first post in this thread only shows the middle image which seems to be a trailed vase with gilded flowers on. It reminds me of a vase in CH 20th Century British Glass page 53 bottom plate 101 left hand vase.  That one is identified as Thomas Webb 1901-1910.

I think they are different makers.  Could the post be split and the images restored to the relevant posts if possible please?  Many thanks.

I can't see the pics -  my computer blocks me from opening them.
I'm not fiddling with my pc settings!

Could I ask you to post the pics directly to the board, please? It makes things so much  easier for everybody, and images don't get lost. :)

Hi Sue
on the top post int he thread, if you click only on the middle image, your computer may just allow you to open it and it's the only one in that set that remains.  It is a picture of the base of the vase showing a polished pontil mark and clear trails that go down the vase and under the base finishing at the edges of the pontil mark.  It has gilded flowers on it very similar to the vase I referenced on page 53.

Just to add,the vase that has the applied green peacock eye prunts with clear surround and trails is reference in Gullivers Victorian Decorative Glass page 88 I believe - Stuart and Sons c 1900.

Adam P are you still a member of the board?
If so, and if you have the pictures, please could you reload your pictures directly to the board as all the images have now been removed apart from one hard to see picture.
Many thanks

Hi

I think I have some photos on a pen drive, I will have a look at the weekend to see if I still have them and post to the board. I'm not at home at the moment so it may be Monday at latest.

Problem is I have gone through a few computers since 2006 and a lot of photos have been lost - but I'm sure I backed most GMB images up.

Thanks
