Title: Glass bowl unknown maker - ID = Fenton using Verlys mould
Post by: msiscoe on November 03, 2009, 07:21:15 PM
Hello, this bowl is listed as either Lalique or Consolidated Glass. Can anyone identify the maker please?

Many thanks!

Its neither Phoenix or Lalique in any of my references. $200 starting bid with a reserve & a $39 standard flat rate shipping fee...you gotta be kidding me.

It's a Verlys pattern, I believe this was a US only design, introduced sometime between 1938 and 1940. However the finishing on this example doesn't look typical for Verlys, this and the lack of a mark suggests it's probably a piece produced by Heisey in the mid 1950s when the moulds were loaned to them. It could even be more recent Fenton production as I believe they now own the Verlys of America moulds.

Hello,

The seller has informed me that she found a very faint "Fenton" mark on the base. Obviously, one of the Verlys molds Fenton ended up with.

Thanks everyone for your input and best regards.

I've amended the subject to attract the attention of James Measell, Fenton archivist, who visits the board in the hope he may be able to tell us more.

Hello,

The seller has contacted me asking when this might have been made. I presume after 1966, when Fenton acquired the Verlys molds.

Any thoughts?

Its after 1970...thats when Fenton started signing their production. I may have been a bit hard on the seller earlier, however you may wish to convey that a fellow poster believes that a far more realistic price is in line rather than a $200 starting bid with a reserve. Frankly its probably a $50 piece at best & I mean at best (it is not rare & it is a reproduction) so the opening bid of $200 coupled with a reserve may present a serious problem in it generating any interest from the Fenton crowd. If it were a good Lalique piece I could perhaps see the opening bid coupled with a reserve. There is a Yahoo Fenton group which is quite large & you might direct the seller there to get a more precise date although not certain its necessary to date it.

Just checked Verlys of America by Carole & Wayne McPeek; the original Verlys name for this pattern was 'Crysanthemum Bowl', the popular/ collectors name is given as 'Casket'. Pattern was introduced in 1939.
