Title: Can anyone ID these square cased vases please?
Post by: Tina on August 22, 2009, 02:41:04 PM
Hello
These seem beautifully made, have interior moulding with the glass thicker in the middle and slimmer at the corners, which I hope you can see in the photo.
Stand 8.75 inches tall and have what may be a pontil marks, not sure.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Tina

They look like contemporary department store fare to me. There won't be a pontil, as the top rim is ground and polished (so no need to attach it to a punty for the rim to be firepolished).

Thanks for your help

Square case vases are Empoli - moderator can you please split out the (Vereco I think)  item that does not belong here?

They look to me, the designs of Nanny Still, c1962 of Riihimaki, Helsinki, however they are also quite similar in appearance from your pictures, to the worrks attributed to Lemmington Glass, of Newcastle, England.  Their designer being Strennett-Willson.  I lean more towards Helsinki, myself!

Square and rectangular stick vases have been made by almost each and every glassworks - it is one of these items for which demand sprung up and glassworks responded with supply. There is not a specific designer at the source, they are all re-interpretations of a theme. The ones in the photograph have been made in Empoli - as far as I can see - even if handling is the only way of being 100% sure.
