Title: Help in identification, please
Post by: Nancy128 on February 28, 2006, 06:38:28 PM
I don't know anything about paperweights, but I picked this up at an estate sale last weekend.  It's small about 2-inches across.  It has a rough pontil and in the middle of the pontil is a dot of white glass.  It also has some letters that are scratched/etched in the bottom.  Looks like CHXN.  Any guesses as to who and where this little weight came from?

It's Chinese, Nancy.  I've got one very similar to this, with the word 'CHINA' in upper case letter scratched on the base.   If you look again I think you'll see this is what is on the base of your weight.

Thanks for your input, Leni.  Do you think it's old and of good quality.  I'm simply asking, because I don't know.  Thanks.

Some people say these were first made in the 1930's, in imitation of the antique French millefiori weights, but others say they continued to be made long after that.

Although some people around here seem to think I'm a bit of an expert on Chinese weights       I have to admit I really don't know!

I think the brighter colours indicate later weights.  The very early '30's ones, although made in the typical Chinese colours of primary red, orange, yellow, blue and green, tend to be in slightly more subdued shades.

I think    :?

That is helpful information, Leni.  The reason I say this, is as I said, in the first post that I had bought this at an estate sale.  It look old to me when I first saw it and I just love millifiori but it's so expensive at the retail level.  And this was so reasonable at $3.00 U.S. dollars that I got it along with some artwork.  I'm hoping to sell the artwork as I got two wood block prints/paintings from Clarence Millet who turns out to be a pretty well known artist from New Orleans.  And because you dated the paperweight, it really ties into the artwork because I was thinking the paintings were from 1920-1940 era.  This just kind of brings everything together.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
