With the wax crayon X's, should not the ad read "annulled", rather than annealed?

Maybe they've had the spots knocked off them? Or maybe not, give that they're in working order  ;D

If this isn't some sort of wind-up then, as the faces appear highly polished and "annealed" is mentioned, it is possible that they might have been calibration pieces for very sensitive polariscopes.  Fairly basic versions of the latter are universally and routinely used for checking annealing in production.

Although they would be expensive to make, why they should be of interest to anyone other than their creator beats me!
