Title: 3 Chance items. Help confirming shapes please.
Post by: scavo on October 29, 2011, 07:24:03 PM
I have what I'm pretty sure are some Chance items.

questions are:

are these little stemmed glasses shot or sherry glasses? (Swirl)
stand 2 3/4" Capacity looks like single shot.

is the bowl 'teardrop' bowl? (Calypto)
longest dimension 11 1/2" x 6 3/4" bowl raised at the pointed end.

What is the name of the plate? (Calypto) 13" x 9 1/4"

I looked on chanceglass.net but these shapes are not represented.

I think I already confirmed these were Chance in a private mail?

The glasses are liqueur.

The bowl is called either Teardrop or Pear. Both terms were used by Chance at various times.

The plate is a "plate" - not sure what else you want to call it. Post-1970 shape.

All explained in my book...

Hi David,

pleased to 'meet' you. I didn't get your email. I may have deleted it accidentally.

You are right, I should buy your book.

But until then ...

I found a tankard that I suspect is Lotus with vintage cars on it. But I cannot confirm from your site.

I replied on the 25th October. The only thing I didn't answer was the definition of the glasses, but I assumed you just needed confirmation that they were Chance.

The tankard may not be Chance but it could possibly be decorating a Sherdley blank. Impossible to say without seeing a photo. Might be best to start a new thread for this.

The transfers were made as 'open stock', probably by Johnson Matthey. Open stock transfers were available to anyone, so you may see the same transfers appearing on ceramics as well as other glass items from other makers - sometimes even on French glass. Chance occasionally used open stock, but most of its decorated ware was made by (and sometimes designed by) Johnson Matthey, exclusively for Chance.

Thanks. I will start a new thread with the tankard if I don't use my limit today.

Scavo, you don't have a limit. We just ask that members use common sense and consideration for others by not flooding the board with a mass of simultaneous queries. :)

Just one caveat to this: to the best of my knowledge, Chance never made a tankard in the Lotus pattern. It's most popular tankard was in the Lancer pattern and these were often decorated with transfers, but not the vintage car series as far as I know. I believe these transfers were produced after the company ceased production of all domestic pressed glass in 1953.

I had better do a post of the tankard in question
