Title: Tall cut glass vase for ID please. ID = Orrefors, Simon Gate design
Post by: ipdglasspolishing on June 20, 2011, 09:49:32 AM
Hi can anyone help me with identification of this fabulous vase. It is 37cm tall and 100% of the surface has been cut.  :thup:

Well if the signature is not a fake - and I don't know enough to state that or not - you have an Orrefors vase.  The problem with the signature is that the glass behind distorts it or misleads the eyes so I can't read all of it.  You will get a much clearer and cleaner version if you take a picture at a shallow angle so the flat surface reflects the light and the writing does not and this is easier to read.  I have attached two photos of a Gunnel Sahlin vase I own which shows the effect.

Much better.  The S would indicate John Selbing   http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Selbing

Who we need to help is Daniel - he worked at Orrefors and still has contacts.  If it is an Orrefors I suspect it might be quite old.

Is it missing it's stopper?

Hi Sue, someone suggested to me that maybe it should have a stopper, I am not convinced that it would have had one but that is based purely on the lack of any wear to the inside rim, I have yet to see an item with a stopper or lid that did not show signs of it having been there.  :thup:

 ;D
I can't imagine what sort of stopper would go with this - but it sort of looks as if it should have had one - from the cupped shape at the top.

Of. G 437. 1928

This is a Simon Gate design for Orresfors - Of. The 'S' is a 'G' for Gate. 437 the pattern number, and 1928 the date. Patterns G 435 - 509 date from 1928, so the pattern number and date on your piece confirm each other.

If it had a stopper is is likely to have been an interesting shape - but I tend toward it being a vase.

Nice vase

IMO the signature says OF GA 37 1928
OF=Orrefors
G=Gate
A=Cut and polished

1928= Year of production.

This vase would have been  designed before 1926.

IMO no stopper. Then it would have a whitish surface inside of the top.

Hi Daniel,

Having had another look at the photo of the mark I agree with you - what I read as a 4 is actually an 'A'. So you're more accurate than I  ;) :D
