Title: Mystery Piece of Pressed Glass Rd 92571?
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on March 23, 2007, 07:04:39 PM
Just a small piece of pressed glass , not really important, had it for about a year and thought I had ID it as Davidson, has a RD No 92571 but that does not seem to exist, the number is very clear and no doubt as to 92571, the R of the Rd is backwards which is not uncommon, I have tried the number in various ways to see if any may be wrong such as 9 could be 6 or if there is a number missing from the front or at the end but seem to be come up blank each time , I sure the piece will be quite easy to ID and would be interested to know the correct RD No , unless it is correct

I have a copy of " The Identification of English Pressd Glass 1842-1902 " by Jenny Thompson, on page 142 it reads, Rd No 92571 30 January 1887 J. Stembridge & Co, Holborn. Importers  Pattern table decoration - lamp, not sure if this is of any help unless anyone knows about this importer, nice piece, I collect Davidson from your photo this is in a colour very much like there's without the Rd No my first guess would have been Davidson.

Hi Tony

Sorry for not replying, not sure from what you are saying do you think its not British made but imported, I do not know anything about them, to me it looks English made, I know I have seen French made vases with Rd No for British retailers , so this item may be similar

J Stembridge & Co would have acted as agents and taken out a Brtish registration on behalf of a glass manufacture most likely from Europe, the maker may be hard to find but if you can find this firm or something about them it may help.

Bought yesterday, RD 92571 J. Stembridge lamp in clear glass, but with a tricorn-shaped bowl (as opposed to Roy's square bowl). In case these lamps were made in different sizes, this tricorn example has 'sides' measuring 4 inches long, and it stands 2¼ inches high.

Interestingly, Roy's lamp and the V&A example (also square) are in a pretty blue glass.

The photo of the RD number quite clearly shows that the R of the RD in this case is quite clearly the correct way round.

Photos of a clear star-shaped (6-armed /sided) dish in the same RD 92571 pattern as the tricorn and 4-sided dishes.

(Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by Rob Young).

By the way, a correction to the registration details of RD 992571 as given in reply #1 – registered on 30 June 1888 (not 1887).

Hello

This is extracted from is a Stembridge advertisment from July 1889 with a Lighthouse Flower Stand (registered) that has the same design motif as the various bowls shown above.  I wonder what was registered - the flower stand or the design motif?

Interestingly, it appears that there may have been the ability to put a candle in the top of the lighthouse.  Would that make it a lamp?

Stembridge registered five designs during 1888-1889. They have all been mentioned in a discussion on the GMB at http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,51989.10.html

Regarding Sid’s question

In response to the question "Does anyone know if the lamp dome bore the RD number too?"

Yes, the domes have the same Rd number embossed on the inside of the dome near the top opening.

so the design registration was presumably for the surface decoration rather than the shape of the whole lamp its the components.

Sid,

Thanks so much for posting the Stembridge light house ad.  I had not seen that design before.
