Post by: glasswizard on October 05, 2005, 08:58:46 AM
Hi all, I picked this vase up the other day and it intrgues me. It is 8 inches tall, a lovely light amber, pressed moulded. I am sure it is not American and any info would be appreciated. Thanks Terry

Terry -

Tinypic is on the fritz again right now so I can't verify - but when I first saw your vase this morning the pattern "Cathedral" came to mind.  So when I got home I looked it up - Heisey Cathedral between 1932-44 and it was made in yellow.  But now of course I can't see the picture of your vase  :?

Terry — I am sure that your vase is not of British manufacture.

Thank you Bernard and Connie. Connie I guess you could say that here in my area I am a bit of a Heisey Expert. I have literally hundreds of pcs. of Heisey in stock and have had the Cathedral vase which you mentioned. Heisey's yellow was called Sahara and is very pale. Here is an example, this is their Empress pattern. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y283/Muscadale/THeiseyempress.jpg
It is looking more and more as if this vase may be Czech. Terry

German.

The vase is shown in the Bernsdorf (formerly Hoffman: aka later Ankerglas) catalogue, 1937.

Glen. is it really Bernsdorf? My 1937/38 catalogue shows a similar on Tafel 46, but that one has got a round foot. Which catalogue pages have you got that I don't?

Same one Pamela.

The sides of the base looked squared off to me, but the image I have is quite small.

If you don't think it's Bernsdorf - then what do I know?

Glen, I do guess that both you and me stare at the same 'SG' pages - it remains so difficult to judge!
I'd like to ask Terry about the base of his vase - is it octagonal or round?

What would you guess is right: my 'Walther vase 01587 Rom'
or VSL as sold as such lately on eBay and pictured in Darvani sites?

Glen: are you able to copy the Bernsdorf Tafel 46 here?
I do not know how this could be done, but could be of interest?

Terry thank you - still trusting to get yours right :D
Glen - which is your opinion now after contemplating Terry's vase's base?

Pamela - same opinion as before. The vase is Bernsdorf.

The base is not angular / square. It is rounded off at the corners. That's how it looks to me in the catalogue drawing (which is, of course, a representation and not a photograph). Everything else about the vase is identical. The shape, the proportions, the concept. The four scallops on the mouth. The moulded arch pattern. The lines down into the base.

It's not a problem if you disagree with me

Glen and Pamela, Thank you so much for all the information. What was an amber vase I bought because I liked it has now turned into a treasured part of my collection. I put a sticky lable on the bottom marked Bernsdorf so that I will know what it is. The memory isn't exatly what it used to be. Thanks again and to you too Peter for asking me to post this piece.
