Title: "pinwheel" Floral Weights
Post by: BobKegeles on January 14, 2014, 12:10:42 AM
Hey paperweight addicts, hope the new year has started well.

I have a pair of these high dome pinwheel flowers weights.

They're reminiscent of Fratelli Toso, but the Fratelli Toso blossoms are generally flat or serrated, and with a starfish pattern on the backs.

They're also similar to some Venetian pieces I've seen, but not quite.

I thought about some of the makers here in the States, but it's not really close to any of the large studios (Rice, Dunlavy, St. Clair, Gibson, Gentile, etc).

I found one matching piece online, on a German glass site, but it didn't say anything about country of origin or maker.

They are a little over 3" tall and 2 3/4" diameter. Bottoms are highly polished.

They really are lovely, the pinwheel effect on the simple round blossoms is very nice.

Peter Von Brackel, in his book, Paperweights. Historcism, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, 1842 to Present, said weights with this motif ( * ) were widespread and in Europe they cover (at least) Germany, Bohemia / Czechoslovakia, Silesia, Thuringia. Date range c1890 to 1930.

( * ) Generally known in Europe as "Trumpet flower" weights.
