Title: Pair of frosted and clear bird (sparrow) paperweight - Kusak?
Post by: heartofsklo on September 05, 2012, 10:27:19 PM
A lovely pair of frosted/clear glass bird paperweights. From search for "glass sparrow" on the net I have found one the same with a vintage label which states -

" KUSAK, MADE IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA " with a champagne/wine glass in the centre. The label is green with the wording copper/gold in color.

Does anyone know anything about this company or where I can find further info?

Don't know who Kusak are, but these look to be the same design as the sparrows originally issued by Schlevogt in the 1930s. As with many of these designs, they've been in production pretty much ever since, both from old moulds and various copies thereof. I'm sure Desna issued them at some point and wouldn't be surprised to see versions from Schubert and others too...

Thanks Mosquito and Rosie -

The Desna ones that I can find on the net are fully frosted, whereas mine are only part frosted.

For reference here is a link to the "Kusak" marked piece - http://www.rubylane.com/item/314806-Cz-Cr-Bird/Frosted-Czech-Art-Glass-Bird (http://www.rubylane.com/item/314806-Cz-Cr-Bird/Frosted-Czech-Art-Glass-Bird)

I have also seen "Ferjac" sparrows too, its a mine field out there!

I have to say I much prefer your semi frosted ones.  They are very delicate looking.
Desna can look very heavy, and birds should look light enough to fly... don't you think?  :)
