Early Perthshire? Could be.

The crispness of some of the canes seems right for Perthshire Paperweights rather than Strathearn.

But ...?

Simone

Here is an early Perthshire I own with same base colour (note: mine is a laid flat photo in daylight)

Here is another Paperweight Strathearn or early Perthshire - note unlike the first paperweight every cane petal is not 'white tipped' a method used by Perthshire 'to make their canes more flower like' - they slowly seemed to lose that method as time went on (I may be wrong Kev will know better, I am just going on my own collection)

(http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/9682/turqs0pb.th.jpg) (http://img224.imageshack.us/my.php?image=turqs0pb.jpg)

You can maybe use these to compare to your paperweight. Note that although neat, the cane formation in Perthshire paperweight one is not as perfect as later versions (see central garland)

Here is a later paperweight by Perthshire - see how perfect it is

(http://img326.imageshack.us/img326/3391/p1copy5hp.th.jpg) (http://img326.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1copy5hp.jpg)

There are other factors but in general Perthshire was set up to make better, neater weights (canes & cane placement) than Strathearn - that took time but mid period when they were bang on, no one can beat that company for total perfection, especially in there Ltd. edition weights.

Thanks for those Adam,

You got the very limited edition golfing one, I'm impressed. :D

I've a few of the limited editions, but have got doubles of some     I got carried away and forgot I already had them when I was bidding on more.

I'm the proud caretaker of 3 Perthshire butterflies, including a 1/1 that was made as a sample for Selmans.

Hi Simone

Perthshire butterflies are beautiful :)  :P

I also have many doubles, but as each is hand made I comfort myself that everyone is an individual

I have a lot of the spoke Perthshire’s, but all in different colours - they would make a lovely display if I could find the room (a room LOL)

I also have these crimp edged ones that J Deacons did as well - I think they are breeding under my bed - as far as I know they came in two sizes miniature and medium, they are difficult to sell on but make great presents :P

Paperweights are always accepted with great glee by my friends, except on one occasion – I gave an Ltd edition Selkirk to my Italian colleague/partner (Milan), he shrugged and threw it into his bag – Huh!

LOL

Hi Adam,

I know what you mean about the Perthshires, I haven't got enough room for a lot of the spokes, so am selling those that are hiding away.

I don't know about you, but the miniatures whether they're the crimped Perthshires, little Strathearns, or any other small ones - are great as a stress reliever, I hold them and turn them over and over when I'm thinking through designs or other things.

Of course paperweights are always well accepted as gifts, and there's been too many people just ask me for one they like, and I gave a Caithness Knossos as a Christmas present to a friend who's helped me out a lot and really, really wanted it, so I couldn't say no.

As for your Italian partner!  He's obviously got no taste - and if I were you, I'd have asked for it back and got him a box of chocolates instead.    :D

Actually I do that, use the small Caithness/Strathearn especially like stress balls - they are all around my office (especially where I sit) LOL

You are right about my Italian friend, we had rugs made up for him one year with his company logo on - he was over the moon. So you get he likes himself a bit.

Oooh I better watch in case he googles me LOL

I've also got the little weights all over my desk! LOL

It might be a good idea to get some chocolates with his name on - he'd love it and it would be cheaper than a rug!

Ohh you are right

What is that saying 'If he was chocolate he would eat himself'

Every present he gives me has his logo on, scarves, shirts, golf balls (!)

But your suggestion has a great irony; I may do that this April

Thanks Simone

LOL Adam - it's a great idea and there's a couple of chocolatiers up north that you should be able to find on the internet.

As for him giving you presents with his logos on - you should gently remind him that you do enough business with him so won't forget him - and don't need to be reminded with all his logos. Just suggest that nice glass or paperweights are a much better way of showing his appreciation.

You never know!

Right now he's buying you what he likes for himself and your gift of a paperweight was what you'd really like - so it's time to buy each other what you'd both like!

And do you know he is only (Milan) two hours away from Venice - I may mention a trip to Murano as I love glass so much.

As for him, I am being a bit cruel, he is a businessman first where as me (myself) and my father are artists/designers who are in the interior design game to make a living.

He actually really likes my Fathers paintings, which sell really well - he has his work in selected Glasgow galleries and they sell well.

The only thing is that Alberto has two of my Fathers paintings in his office - proudly in the middle wall - one is upside down LOL - My Father has told him but he says he likes it that way. I love Italy and Italians they are such good fun but try and tell them they are wrong - I speak from experience after travelling there many, many times and indeed entertaining them here as well.

One thing I have to admit is (I hate this) Alberto is same age as me 38 and very good looking, in fact most people in the interior design trade in Italy are good looking, woman and men.

Sometimes it does feel very artificial - I wish I could go up North to Perthshire and make glass for the rest of my life – where looks and business cards are not an issue.

That is my little dream.

Adam, both you and your father are very gifted and talented people.

As for following your dream, maybe one day, you'll make a break with convention and do that - I really undrestand where you're coming from. All the facade of glamour, good looks and perfection is so easily stripped away from some of those people who use the facades to compensate for their insecurities. You're not like that - you're real, have real ambitions and don't place too high a value on looks, but on talent.

As for a trip to Murano - it's worth it. My friend brought me a couple of millefiori ashtrays when he popped in this morning from Italy on his way to the Dominican Republic (I think being older makes it easier to tell people what you'd like rather than what they would like for you).

As for Italy, enjoy the food, wine, art and glass, not necessarily in that order - and remember that business is business, nothing more than a means to an end.

What you could do is collect the glass and get inspired by the paperweights for your designs. I'm in the middle of trying to make a website wallpaper of different millefiori and canes. It's hard work but will be worth it in the end.

I'm sure you do the same in your own way, but imagine if you designed special fitting for glass displays...

Hey Adam,
Have you learnt nothing from this forum??
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It definitely comes from within.
And...did you ever see the programme on Italians as lovers? Well, they just don't live up to their reputaion.
Lots of women go for intelligent men, but if you are not confident with you, it will be conveyed.
Well enough spouting from me, or this thread is destined for the cafe.
If you ever go North and make glass, which is as good as your knowledge about it......especially paperweights,.....let me know....I want some.  :)  :)

Della, Adam is intelligent and beautiful within - and so just from that should feel secure within himself and believe in his very strong capabilities.  :D

Thanks Simone

Wise words - I do use more abstract paperweights as inspiration for rug and carpet designs, furniture is a more difficult as people want it simple - which is good as we are agents for Gallotti and Radice (Italian glass furniture at it's best since 1950)

Della you are right, although I have never had a male Italian lover LOL

You will have the first piece of glass, if I ever go up North, which is really only an hour or so away from me LOL

I missed that signed Venini weight btw it went for over £100.00 - to think I could have had it for $9.00 - LOL spilt milk, I have too many eyes on others things to weep

Oooh I just got that last post from you Simone – how lovely of you – you and Della are such beautiful people, no wonder this is such a great board it’s not about profit it’s about knowledge and even more the beauty of a thing.

What a lovely thought to go dream upon
