I bought this rather nice bird recently on ebay, it was sold as Kosta Boda (like a lot of glass animals) but I have my doubts about that. I think it is pressed glass with a flat back and it stands a little over 10cm or 4 inches tall. It does look Scandinavian to me but does anyone know the maker?
Thanks, John.
-
Is it signed? If it isn't, I would say it is made in the spirit of Kosta Boda, but is by someone else. It doesn't look like any of their designers' work to me.
-
I have a couple of the Kosta lions which are not signed just stickered, so they where not all signed (very similar style to this)
all the best

Sadly it is not signed and has no sticker, I had wondered if it was made by Pukeberg or..... (insert/delete as appropriate).
Thanks to you both, John.

Michelle, after I wrote the last message, I checked eBay and saw there was a stickered Boda owl and a piece like the one in this thread being sold as Kosta Boda. I wondered if all the pieces were signed. It appears that the animals of some designers are signed, but not all pieces.

Thank you Anita, I just had a look at ebay and there is a cockerel for sale with a base just like my bird and a Boda sticker (item 110400292491).
Not a cast iron id but good enough for me.
I think I owe the seller of my bird an apology......

I bought exactly the same bird last week when I was with David Encill. He was slightly miffed that I spotted it first and bagged it for £1. ;D
-
A bargain! I was pleased with only paying £5 and a few quid postage.
I think they should be worth squillions....

The Kosta animals I've had weren't signed. Bill doesn't mention a cockerel in his list here http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,13956.msg98157.html#msg98157 but maybe it wasn't in the Kosta Boda Zoo series. Boda being pre-Kosta Boda
-
I don't think Bills list covers all the Zoo animals, just those that appeared in the 1986 catalogue, I may be wrong? There was also a Kennel and Farm series of animals I think?
-
It's probably one form the Farm series.
Meant to say it's not pressed, it's cast
-
Thank you Christine you are right it is cast not pressed, which I guess helps give it part of it's naive or 'crude' appeal (to me).
Farm series? Oh no, more to collect!

Hi John
There was a small paper brochure inserted in the original box for each of the Boda Zoo animals. The brochure depicts the range available at that point. The brochure I have seen shows a Rhino (two model numbers) Bird with curled tail (the same as the one you have purchased), Ibis with curled horn, Large hippo, Small hippo, Swimming hippo (two model numbers), Lion (three model numbers), Large giraffe, Small giraffe, Owl, Donkey, Large rabbit, Small rabbit, Large cat, Small cat, Elephant (two model numbers), Large horse, Small horse, Ram, Rooster, Turtle, Frog, Reindeer, Crocodile - and what I think is a bear but the shape and writing are indistinct.
Happy hunting!

Thankyou for the info Silvergirl, that is quite a large number of animals to find. I have had the opportunity to buy the Ibis (which was a lovely design) and like a fool I turned it down. Oh well, you live and learn. ;D
John.

Hi John - my typing error - an Ibex rather than an Ibis - but I think we are thinking of the same thing. A rather spectacular little sculpture of a deer/goat like creature with a back curling horn. I have also missed a couple of opportunities to purchase and regretted it.

... I owned some Boda Zoo animals at one time and in researching them Kosta Boda was so nice to send me the list that is mentioned. The list attributes the complete series to Bertil Vallien.
The "confused pressed glass bird" is item nr. 97615-3, rooster (Swedish: "tupp"), height 110 mm.
As for the goats: the one in the picture is item nr. 97619-3, goat (Swedish: "bock"), height 115 mm, while there is also one that is described as Steinbock (Swedish: "stenbock"), height 100 mm (item nr. 97755-3).
For those collecting: look for 39 pieces (at least) ;)
-
That is fantastic thank you very much for the info. 8) So it is not an eagle after all? ;D
John.
-
i´m a bit confused about the goat.
mine is a bit taller than the measure you give, NKP. ~130mm
did they make different sizes?
-
The one in my photo is 12.7cm high.
-
thanks, Martyn. with mine being exactly 12.9cm this difference should be
within normal tolerances i suppose.
-
Does anyone know if there was a fox in the Kosta farm series? I have just bought one that has a lot of similarities to my Kosta flatback elephant.
-
... could well be from Royal Krona (possibly Lisa Larson).
-
Thank you for that hint :)
Google revealed this one which is identical:-
