Bought this for a friend to match her new bedroom curtains!!!!! I am fairly sure it is new Polish glass, but wondered in any event if anyone may have seen it before. It is 6.5 inches tall and about 5.5 inches wide. Base has oval shaped polished pontil mark with little wear. Whatever it is, it feels a fairly good quality and the green trailing is applied to the surface.

Interesting timing. Astrid kindly emailed me recently to ask about an attribution, Leerdam Tortuga, I had on my Picasa album for a blue version of this piece. She had been at the Leerdam museum and noticed the Tortuga examples there didn't look my piece. Her conclusions matched the direction I was going in as I had started looking for similar Tortuga pieces on the internet and hadn't found any. You'll find a few of these pieces on eBay and elsewhere being sold as Barovier & Toso, Siderio, or Leerdam, Tortuga.
Astrid suggested that they might be Gistl glashütte, Germany, and provided this link. http://www.glaskilian.de/Gistl.524.0.html. It's a link worth exploring, but I'm not absolutely positive it's the correct attribution still. I've got another similar piece arriving by mail this week so I'll add more later.

I can confirm the Gistl probability, they come in a great variety of shapes and sizes. It is not Tortuga - even if sellers like to misrepresent these vases as such.
-
Thanks, Ivo. I suppose it would be too much to hope that Eisch had anything to do them as I believe he worked there for a while.

How very interesting. I would much appreciate if you find out anything more on these in the future....... And if Gistl.........is this company still in existence? Just looked at your link and see that Gistl could be a contender.
My vase is in such good unblemished condition it looks almost new.
-
Ah, I see David and Ivo already have beaten me to it... I'm currently trying to acquire one of these, but I think it's unmarked. I've seen the Gistl attribution a few times on these pieces for sale, independent of one another, but no label as of yet. If I ever see one with a label, I'll confirm.

...just remembered something. Unfortunately Poschinger also made very similar vases. :-\

I think the pieces in question seem to have heat-finished rims, while the Porshingers appear to have a polished or frilly rim.
Does this help any?
-
Sue:
I think you're right about the rims. I'm sticking to Gistl for my piece.
David

Sorry for playing the devil´s advocate, but one could also argue the other way:
The Poschinger vases have a pontil mark, the labelled Gistls have a ground rim... :thud:
-
But, Dirk, you play the devil's advocate so well!
My second piece arrived and certainly didn't clear up anything for me. It seems newer, less well made, a cut rim that has been ground, and no hint of a pontil mark. Yet the trailed blue is an exact match for the other piece I have. I don't know anything about Gistl or Poschinger. Does one have a better reputation for the quality of its products than the other? I'm leaning towards accepting that a different company made each of my pieces, or that they were made many years apart and the company changed how they were made. Here are the pictures of the rims and the bases and I'll put the picture of the overall piece in the next post.

The overall picture of the piece. It's 8" tall.

Poschinger is the longest operating glassworks in Germany I think; they started somewhere in the 16th century.
Their output is of high quality; their designs however started to stagnate somewhere after WWII. Nowadays they
produce mass products as well as high quality glass; some of their output are copies of their own art nouveau
pieces.
Gistl was founded somewhere in the 1920´s, if I remember correctly. They mainly produced stemware, decanters etc.
to that time; I´ve only seen vases, which date after WWII so far. Don´t know when exactly they stopped producing
as Gistl.
BTW both glassworks are situated in the city of Frauenau. Gistl was even founded in a formerly Poschinger glassworks.
This might explain the similarity between the designs.
Generally I´d associate the better quality with Poschinger. Concerning the vases in question I can only judge by the
pieces I´ve handled. All labelled Gistl vases of this type I´ve seen had a ground rim. To confuse things further there´s
also a third type of vase: green trails applied as slings, no pontil mark, fire polished rim. I think we´ll have to decide for
each piece individually and wait for a labelled one of each shape... :X:
-
Dirk,
Very helpful. I'm putting down both of mine as German for now.
David

Just for the record, mine has both a polished pontil mark and what looks like a fire polished rounded rim!
-
Finally - here´s a labelled one - Gistl:

Ah, thanks for the confirmation, Dirk! :hiclp:
