Title: Sommerso Pink Gold Hanging Lamps? Help ID
Post by: pam roybal on October 15, 2005, 11:36:54 PM
Could these be Sommerso? They seem to be very close to the picture on page 23 "Circa Fifties Galss".  They have the controlled bubbles, gold inclusions, opaque pink core inside, and layered. They are 10" tall Anybody know?
Thanks
Pam

The more that I look at these I think they are parts to a lamp.

These are lovely

They are 'cased' (body of glass with another layer of glass over it - often clear over coloured) with an opaque white, the clear glass outer layer has bubbles filled with brassy coloured aventurine (type of glass paste containing copper shavings)

They are not Sommerso which is a cased glass with inner colour applied with another colour over it usually twice, but sometimes three times - gives a multi layered effect

But hey I still love your light shades - 1950s drops with gadrooned shape, I think Italian feel Murano but I could be wrong

David-Thanks for the help, I did some searching on ebay and boy the completed searches have some that look almost the same and they are listing them as Murano, they could be wrong but I think I will do as much researching as I can before I list them.  I want to sell them for some Christmas money but I want to make sure I list them right.
Thanks

Well I did say I feel they may be Murano - eBay is not the best place to get an attribution as they will say anything to pump up the prices -

Did any of the similar pieces you saw state what company in Murano? - in the 50s there were a fair few doing this type of thing - Barovier is a firm that springs to mind

This is a good resource http://www.great-glass.co.uk/library/lib4ab.htm

David- I do agree, ebay is not the best place to get the right informaion, that is why I will continue to do the research before I sell. GREAT site, I added it to my favorites. Thanks again for all of your help.

I would bet that this lamp is not by Barovier - they didn't do this kind of work.  It is most probably by Alfredo Barbini, circa 1950s. They did a lot of this bullicante work, often in pastel colors such as this.

Hello pam roybal!
I believe this is infact a Barbini lamp like Laura said, but actually taken apart in 2 pieces. I have seen them before with a middle gold disk uniting the 2 pieces, both in Pink and have seen it in Blue.

Hello Svazzo, you have been a great help again! I wish I could see a picture of the lamp whole, I have been imaging what the lamp shade would look like and how the base pieces might fit together.  I will keep searching the web and ebay maybe I will run across a picture of one. I really need to sell them but I find myslef thinking of special spots I could put them, like maybe around  my bathtub or turn them into hanging lights and putting them above my eating bar or using them as candle holders, I really don't want to see them go, :(  growing up in the 50's makes it even harder to let go of them.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Pam,
If I had a photo I would post it for yo uto see.
Maybe I can describe it.... The 2 larger sides of the pieces go together, inverted, one on top of the other (with a glass disk with gold in between). The thin points go on teh bottom and top respectively. Think of it as having a long thin balloon, twisting it at the middle, and pulling each side out. Then put it on a small square base, and put a lamp shade on top, lol.
Thats what it should look like.
I think your idea of having them as hanging lamps is excellent.
If you keep them you should try it out!

Pam, On the other hand you could have two lamp bases. :) Have a look at this and see what you think....  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7356461372 looks very close to me.

Javier, what do you think... could they be individual bases instead?

Javier- I put them together like you said and it looks really cool! It sure would make one big lamp, by the time you add the shade and hardware it would really make a bold statement in any room. Thanks for the description.
Anne-Thanks for the link, that  lamp base looks so close to  my lamp bases, wow, they could possibly be two lamps. I can't stop playing with them, my husband thinks I am nuts.

Anne- Thanks so much! :D I was on that site yesterday but I just have a dial up connection and I gave up before I got to the lamps. Wow! They are big lamps, just think they are about 55 years old! I wish I had the full lamp but I guess I was just lucky to find what I have. I hope Javier sees them.
Everybody on this site is so much help, I wish I could answer some of the questions people post but I just don't seem to have enough knowledge. I have been collecting glass for about 20 years and still know so little about glass. Someday I will have an answer to a post.
Thanks Again!
