Just curious really as I've never seen a signed piece of AVeM before, does anyone know if the signature is real or fake?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DINO-MARTENS-AURELIANO-TOSO-venini-Mottled-glass-vase-/170948075670
Obviously the title and description is wrong as the signature reads "Arte Vetraria Muranese" (AVeM) not Aureliano Toso.
-
I don't know, but it doesn't look like a Dino Martens design (I'm not even sure it is Murano at all); a roughly ground, unpolished pontil mark would be rather untypical for high end Murano glass, IMHO...

I have one of those, though the colours are a bit nicer. It's not signed neither is the base rough ground; it's semi-matte ground using quite a small wheel, as you can see the wheel marks (much like on some Malta Decorative Glass). I was told "mother in law bought it on holiday somewhere, Malta perhaps".

I notice it had been previously sold in October... I wonder if the buyer returned it, or where there possibly 2 identical ones?
-
I assume "identical" is tongue in cheek, as getting the splotches the same would be miraculous :-X
-
Yeah I assume they either returned it or never sent payment. Thanks for the replies, looks like it's probably not Murano then. Maltese does sound more likely.
-
I'm not saying it's Maltese, more that it was a holiday souvenir
-
Sorry, I know we're not sure of anything ;) I just meant it seems more likely than Murano. I was also thinking maybe Polish with those bright colours. Anyway, main reason to ask was just in case anyone knew for sure if the signature was fake, I could let the seller know, although it's ended now...and if it WAS genuine, which seemed unlikely, it would be interesting to know. :)
-
I would very much doubt Maltese.
Christine - I had always thought that bit of yours had come from St Helen's World of Glass! When we visited, there was an atrist's piece for sale of a similar design - in a deep lilac ground with mostly greens and blues - I was very tempted by it.

It would be good to know why it was returned... 'Not as described' comes to mind.
I like it, there is something very balanced and cheerful about it.

Now if it were a bird:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110981623659
We would know who made it!
-
The Peter Kaspar bird certainly shows a similar colour range.
And in the website for Glashütte Peter Kaspar (http://www.peter-kaspar.de/index.html), although there are no obviously similar items shown, there are some pieces using a very similar colour to that of the main body colour in the vase.
Maybe an email to the company (perhaps by one of our members fluent in German) would be useful.
-
I've just bought the bird KevinH, so when it arrives, I will check that the colourways are as similar as they appear to be to this piece, and if so, I will attempt a google translation letter to Peter Kaspar to see if he made the vase... and come back with any answer... that is unless anyone else would like to volunteer....Dirk??? :)
-
The trouble with comparing colours is that there is a limited number of suppliers of colours; companies don't make their own these days...
-
That's very true Christine, but it just might help, even if only to get a reply saying it isn't one of theirs... you never know.
In the meantime, KevinH, thank you for introducing us to a beautiful collection of glass...I found it quite breathtaking.
-
Chrsitine's point about colours is valid.
However, maybe individual glassmakers, or companies, choose a limited selection of colours and shades according to their own taste, or current fashion, or whatever seems to attract their customers. If that is true, then similarity of colour palette may be a good clue to a maker.

Just spotted a pair of these, one signed:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AVEM-Arte-Vetraria-Muranese-Pair-of-glass-vases-Italian-Murano-/310533471050
and another here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXCEPTIONALLY-RARE-SIGNED-Dino-Martens-Murano-Glass-Vase-AVEM-1955-/230894677787
They seem to be rather common all of a sudden!
Edit - looks like the seller in the second link bought the one shown in the first post, so that explains one of them.
-
I have sent them an email with some of the eBay links, so let's see if we are lucky enough to hear back!!:
Rosemary Pearce.
Please don't tell me it is terrible grammar, 'cos it has gone now and I can't ammend it!
Rosie. :)

Morning all!
I received a very fast reply from Peter & Monika today:
Sehr geehrte Frau Pearce,
die Vasen sind nicht von uns.
Wir wünschen Ihnen ein schönes Wochenende und Frohe Weihnachten
Monika und Peter Kaspar
So the vases are not made by them.
Sometimes illimination can be as useful as considering a probable or possible maker, however, we sill don't know two things... one is, are these genuine signatures, and the other, (possibly of less importance), is, why has the same buyer now put the same vase up for sale three times?
