Title: Mdina date and an oddity ID help please
Post by: Jeffingtons on August 08, 2011, 03:01:21 PM
Hi all

Two charity shop finds here:  a signed Mdina paperweight in a style I've not come across yet and a teardrop shaped weight that I only took to make up a three items for £1.

I'd like to know when the mdina weight dates from.  There's no label only the signature.

The other one, i'm more intrigued as to where it may be from.  It's blues and greens are mdina-esque, with a ground base that is decently finished but unsigned and unlabelled.  I'm not sure what to make of it as it's an odd shape and I can't make my mind up if I like it or not.

Any help much appreciated.  Photo links below
Thanks

Just looking at the colours of the Mdina weight, they certainly look more modern.  Would think it would be safe to assume it wasn't produced much before the late 70s, I wouldn't be surprised if it was much more recent. It's not a pattern I'm that familiar with, just that the colour/ design isn't early in style.

Hope it helps a little.

Have you considered that the second "Paperweight" might be in fact a ring holder?

I'm a bit clueless about anything to do with pws, I'm afraid.

There are two types of splodgy stuff - very plain and slightly more complex - which your weight is - there are shadows around the coloured bits, they're not just plain.
I'm clueless about the other thing - but I know that recently they've been making big animals and fish and dolphinny things - it might be part of this - or it could be an obelisk that went wrong.........

The second could be a ring holder.  I don't think it's got a great deal of quality about it anyway.  The shape is rather uneven and it doesn't look very consistent or well produced in the colours.  Still, for 30p it's not so bad.

Just a little aside I thought I'd add for amusement's sake.  Wonder how many of you have had similar problems.

Snuck these two into the house and displayed them in my music room, thinking the wife would tell me off for wasting more money on glass.  She snuck in this morning, caught sight of them and spent ten lustfilled minutes admiring them.  I think I may have lost them to her.

Oh dear.
