Title: Is this a Strathearn closepack ? on a very dark purple (looks black) ground
Post by: flying free on December 03, 2011, 03:41:20 PM
I've given up looking for this one as I have become so confused.  From what I've gathered I ended up thinking this must be a Strathearn closepack.  Would that be right please?
My camera has no battery at the mo, so I am unable to add a base and side shot to what I already have, but can do later on.
It measures just under 2 1/2 wide by 2" high.
Thank you for any help  :sun:

Hi Flying free,

Yes, it is Strathearn closepack.

Would I be right in thinking these cannot be dated as they were made throughout Strathearn's lifespan?
In my previous searches that is the conclusion I came to, however, I've recently found one that seems to be more specifically dated?  or would that be because there are specific canes in it that tie it to a certain period?
thank you   :)

These closepack were made throughout Strathearn's existence. So they are not easily dated. Canes can indeed help date a weight if you know what you are looking for. I am not a specialist so I cannot help there. However I would strongly advise that you have a look at Richard More's website where he shows all the Strathearn's production and much more. Also, he has a gallery of pictures for individual Strathearn canes with the year of production. You could compare these with the canes in your weight.

Hi. Agreed - I think very few -if any - Strathearns can be dated by the canes (other than those with a specific date cane in them!) and the other, more general canes in those got used from year to year. I think some of the earlier pieces may share some 'late Vasart' canes, but that is about all you can say - and distinguishing late Vasart and early Strathearn is well nigh impossible anyway!  I have had lots of the closepacks like yours (and spokes), and never really found much to help tie them down to a date.

Thanks again Sophie - it is a fabulous site! I spent many hours going through it looking at the various weights.  I will have another look again to see if I can match some canes :o
Alan our posts crossed and thank you  :)
