Title: Unidentified Davidson pieces
Post by: glassaddict on September 15, 2006, 03:14:02 PM
Hi again,
Help with these would be appreciated. I think the cakestand and trophy vase may be Jacobean  :?:
I can't find any markings on any of these pieces so would be grateful for all opinions as to the pattern/dates.

They don't lean like the photo's suggest - just a wonky picnic table

Many thanks
Hil.

Hi,

Have you tried searching for these on Chris Stewart's web site?

http://www.cloudglass.com

Do you mean Chippendale, rather than Jacobean?

The trophy vase here: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g294/bananabons/FlinttrophyVase.jpg has Chippendale-style handles but it's not Davidson or Chippendale.

The pattern on the vase itself and the wavy top edge (ignoring the handles for a minute) actually looks like my Sowerby 2481 jug here: http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pos=-697 so I popped Glen's CD Book on Sowerby into the PC and found a 2481 celery vase like yours but without the handles. I'll have a trawl through the rest of the CD and see if I can match the handled one and come back on that later... unless Glen beats me to it. ;)

A few makers copied the Chippendale-style handles as that was a very popular line so I can't see why Sowerby didn't. :).

Anne, you're absolutely correct - the celery is on the Sowerby CD. It is from Sowerby's "Oxford" suite.

The cake stand is also Sowerby (and is also on the CD). The pattern is called "Portcullis" by Carnival collectors. It is Sowerby's 2381. Introduced in the late 1920s.

The vase is familiar - I'll work on it and post if I can.

The vase now - it's American. It's Imperial's #474 vase in crystal. I think it is their Collectors' Crystal, date circa 1960s (but I will happily be corrected on that).

Thank you Anne and Glen ... you are amazing!!
Can I just make sure I got things right please?

The twin handled vase is is from Sowerby's "Oxford" suite?.
The cake stand is Sowerby's 2381?. c1920's
The vase is possibly Imperial pressed crystal?. c1960's

And the 2 'ribbed vases' are Davidson??    There is one here http://www.glassencyclopedia.com/Davidsonsglass.html in pearline    but no number or pattern mentioned.

Thank you once again
Hil

The two ribbed vases - you're correct with the one you found in Pearline...  I think this is RD 130643, known as the 643 pattern, registered 13 Aug 1889.

The other one I'm fairly sure is Davidson Chippendale but would welcome a second (or more opinion to be certain).

Ahhh thanks for the improved picture... are the alternate panels slightly pointed then rounded in turn as it looks in the photo?

Yes Anne exactly as you describe  :)

In that case I doubt Chippendale as all the Chippendale pieces I have seen are all rounded tops to the panels, not alternate pointed ones.  It may well prove difficult running this one to earth as lots of makers copied or did similar patterns to Chippendale, both in England and the USA. Let's see if anyone can make suggestions as to who it may have been (or even better, recognise it from the new photo.)
