Title: You all may like this one. Arts crafts Scottish decanter, any ideas?
Post by: Andy on February 22, 2007, 10:28:34 PM
Just got a few bits from an auction, this one is fascinating,  I presume arts Crafts/nouveau
c1900. A decanter, covered in pewter, enamel panels, and a piece of Tartan cloth (Frank??)
initials BL, maybe connected with tartan?
I think its a period piece, and i presume prob. Scottish! Not fantastic condition, pewter is quite
thin and has some cracks, glass seems ok! Enamel looks quite good quality.

The tartan cloth is a bit tatty, although ive just washed it, and hoping it will dry
better, and they are soap bubbles in the photo!, inside glass.

Any ideas or guesses on this one are welcome, I have no idea ??? ???

You'll all like this one.
Well, sorry, but I do not like this at all. Definitely not my taste. ;D

Is the stopper correct for that body? It looks completetly out of character to me.

Sorry Kev,
I was presuming a bit there, it wont be to everyones taste,  :)
I thought it may be of interest even if you dont like it ;)
And yes, i do have a few doubts about the stopper,
Id just add, around the shoulder the decanter has a shallow ring around it, so i think
it was made to fit the 'pewter craftsman' ??

Freaky!

I think a bit of Mens technical college work. So no academic aesthetics, pure heart :)

Hi Andy, why not try to identify the tartan? although there are hundred's of them, these people may be able to help www.scottishtartans.org, if you find out what clan it belong's to it may put you closer to identifying the decanter.

Just had a freindly reply from Matt, at the The Scottish Tartans Museum
in NC USA,

Andy,

It's really hard to ID a tartan from such a small, faded portion, but assuming these colors have been
faded, and teh orange once was a red, etc., based on what I see it appears to be a form of the Royal
Stewart tartan, or some variation of it (like Prince Charles Edward Stuart).  Without seeing a larger
peice of it I could not say more.
Aye,
Matt

How nice , as its not often you get replies to Qs like this :D

I think i just sent him the close up of the tartan patch,
he obviously loves tartan as much as we love glass :D
I may send an email to Mel Gibson to see if he wants it ;)
Actually Scottish history is not my particular area of expertise :-\
Anyway , ive now found my own Tartan, so i may get a skirt, sorry, Kilt
made up for me ;D
