The weight I have just posted has a cane with 8 coggy lobes and on each lobe are 3 spines, if that makes sense. I have only had one very early Perthshire weight with those in but they are mainly seen in vasart weights.
I dont know of any strathearn or vasart swirls so what are your thoughts about the weight? Roger.

I'd have guessed early Perthshire - but could it be John Deacons?

My first thought was an early perthshire, although this pattern doesnt seem to have gone into production.
Just looked in the Perthshire book and on page 8 are a collection of moulds. In the middle, second row down is the mould in question, perhaps a leftover from vasart. I guess this was only used very rarely early on.
With regard to JD, the swirl is rather his type isnt it? (cant find a reference at the moment). Could he have experimented with this swirl while at Perthshire, because the canes are not like his personal early ones I believe.
Another interesting thing is the swirl does not go to the bottom of the weight. The base seems to have been a fire polished, then minimaly ground out. The diameter is 3 inches. Roger.

Checked the ultra violet long and short wave, and the colours are the same as my definite 1976 perthshire. I realize this doesnt limit it to perthshire glass totally but I will assume it is unless anyone can add anything else.

has it a hollow ground pontil roger?
-
Hi Ray, 4 photos of base. Yes its hollow ground but only in the centre where it was deemed necessary I guess.
Similar to the base finish on the 1976 perthshire PP11 I have.
The ridgy 8 lobed canes on the outer edge of the middle cane I have noticed are in strathearn also sometimes. I find it odd that there is no return spiral underneath as there usually is.
Still wonder if JD at perthshire is a maybe, around 1970?
Roger.

have you the perthshire book roger ?

YES.

have a look at page 90 at the PP21 as the rest of the swirls have a flat polished base, if you can send me a full on top view of the weight and send it to raybassfisher at talktalk dot net .. just change the at and the dot, i will be seeing JD next week so i will print it off and show him

The closest we can come to on the ID of this 3.00 inch swirl is that it is probably Perthshire experimental around 1970.
Regards Roger.
