Title: Art Deco Frosted Glass Dishes - French but Arrers or Auxers?
Post by: David555 on October 03, 2005, 09:54:01 PM
A pair of frosted glass dishes from the 1930s

4.5" diam, 5" long with deco stepped handle, 1.25" high - frosted to outer only with normal interior - hand finished to a high degree with edges ground down at lip, yet nice crisp moulded flower and leaf decoration to underside - clear colour with 'MADE IN FRANCE' under handle

lesser French, maker but any clues to which one - I think they are sweet or Bon Bon dishes

They are still pretty dirty but there is no damage and  no scratching, thinking of listing them soon

Arrers I think. I'll double check against a signed piece I have later today.

That is excellent I googled and found a site with a piece exactly like my two pieces - Arrers 1930s

Any other feedback appreciated as mine is not signed 'Arrers Made in France' - just 'Made in France' is that normal and were Arrers a good company?, not my best subject French Deco

Don't know anything about Arrers. They seem to have had only a few designs, but well made and with nice opalescence. I have a larger bowl of the same/related pattern. I think it's hazelnuts but maybe someone with a more horticultural background would have more idea about that. Here's a photo of the signature on the back of mine:

Thanks Jo

I can see the decoration on mine is exactly the same as yours, but mine has not got flattened flower heads enabling a mark like yours 'Arrers made in France' - my flower head feet (three of them) are to a point and the mark is just 'Made in France' under the handle - also mine a frosted but not opalescent

I think its the same company just a different style of marking item - the 'Made in France' type set on yours and mine is exactly the same

Title: Auxers small bowls
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on October 04, 2005, 04:47:29 PM
HI

Hope I can help, I had last year the complete set of this glass in Opalescent, its part of a Desert Set , one large Bowl and Six small ones, I believe only the large bowl has the makers name on it in most cases, while the small bowls may just say Made in France,  the way the name looks is very mis-leading as I am 99.99% sure the the Company was called Auxers, I think there is a letter s on end,  I sold my complete set onto a Dealer who only sold French Glass and I remember at the time there was very little information if any to be found on the internet

Thanks Roy

That may very well be the case - my bowls are smaller and don't carry the full name?

Jo is your piece larger size that could be the bowl of a desert set?

I don't know about the name - Roy reads it as Auxers while Roy reads it as Arrers

http://tinypic.com/e8uyae.jpg - I get Auxers and Arrers when I google but from Roy's pic I would say it looks like Arrers, or does it, that could just be an A and X rather than two R's

?????

David, Yes mine is the larger bowl. I am sure the first two letters are AR but the next letter could be RV or even X  :? The last three letters are ERS. I think it's either Arrers or Arvers. Arvers seems to be a French surname, so maybe that is more likely?  :?

Excellent Jo

We seem to have with the help of Roy identified that this was a desert set  - large bowl which was signed Arrers, Auxers or Arvers to base with six, perhaps eight smaller bowls with 'Made in France' under the handle - Art Deco c1930 in either opalescent or clear glass, probably other colours as well (perhaps tints)

Jo any chance of a pic of your large bowl? - a lot to ask but I can then place in next to my two smaller dishes for a more complete research picture

Ref the name - I have taken a few pics and done this impression - it looks like Arrers to me

Jo that is excellent - same design no doubt and is part of a desert set

I am sure these items are worth money as stand alone French art deco - I think there will be few who have a full set in perfect nick

Yours is opalescent - slighltly nicer than my plain frosted dishes that go with it

I am sure your bowl is worth £100.00+ easy on eBay where they are crazy for the French companies around at same time as Lalique

I recently sold a French glass nude in frosted green with a number on base and got £120.00 for it (I paid £5.00  )

I think it is probably a customer brand not a manufacturer. .

Hi

Your spelling was correct, the person I sold to told me this hope it is of some help

Hi Roy,
Yes you have sold to me on a couple of occasions, and you used to email me with some questions about French glass before that.
The name is Arrers, and I don't know anything more than that they were making those hazelnut bowls and small bowls - fruit sets? -  around the 1930's  It's a bit like G Vallon - the pieces are very familiar, but no-one knows much about the maker. I think the reason that they are not known about is because at that time the manufacture of Opalescent glass was centered in France, and many small glassworks sprang up around the main ones of Lalique, Sabino, Etling, etc., riding on the market that they had created, and as quickly disappeared when the market changed.
I have moved  quite a few pieces of Arrers over this last year I still have a large bowl and four small ones.  A couple of the small ones were sold last week on eBay on eBay.fr as well.  It is a very pretty pattern, and the pattern looks as though the moulds were made by the greatest mould maker of the time - Frankenhauser, or a name like that - I am not too good at remembering names. He, the mould maker made a lot of the moulds for Lalique, Etling, Hunebelle, etc.
I am finding the market in French Opal glass is not very good at the moment, so I am holding onto my glass, and indulging in another passion, collecting coins.
Kind regards
Robert

Hi Robert

More excellent information - Arrers it is

I am very interested in the mould maker thread and Frankenhauser moulds do seem very similar from a quick comparison - The crispness and the finishing off is fantastic even in my two small pieces
