Title: Yellow "mottled" glass lamp base
Post by: Kanadiana on March 21, 2006, 09:36:50 PM
Hello,

Does anyone know anything about this lamp?
It's clear pale-yellow glass but with mottled/opaque
splotches all through it and brass (?) parts. Old plug.
Bottom cover of base is missing so no indication of
maker or how old it might be. No shade ... I'm wondering
what kind of shade went with it too ;)

Thanks a lot for any help :)

K.

Lamp looks czech 30's fairly utility so would most likely have had a parchment shade. Possibly painted.

Thanks a lot Frank ... the owners of this motel happen to be
Czechoslovakian, I'll ask them if they know anything
about the lamp ... and I really like the idea that a painted
parchment type shade may have been what the lamp originally
had, because it sounds like it "fits" the style and colour and I
know would look great :D

Cheers,

Example of a professionally painted shade on a Scottish lampbase, late 1920's - 30's.

Scottish! Nice ... the Orkney genes in me like that lamp a lot! :D
I really like the shade ... and now I'll be scouting for a parchment
shade and shapes that would suit my lamp. (I've always really liked
parchment shades)

Cheers,

K.

PS: I just browsed the catalogues and they're great! Thanks for providing that link!

You might be able to get everything you need from a craft shop, frames certainly, but not sure about parchment but they will have a paintable substitute. Spraying with matt colours is easiest if your not handy with a brush. Stencils for designs. Originals rarely survive.

I'd actually thought about making or painting/whatever a shade ...
It never occured to me to "spray" paint though. good idea!
I've seen some really nice painted parchment shades. If i can get
my hands and wrists to work with me (rheumatoid arthritis and related problems) I'll probably give that a go and see what happens ... and if I like the results, may even post a picture of the lamp dressed in a Kanadiana Hat ... eh? ;)

Hey ... one of the things I'm noticing in all my glass surfing is just
how many things have passed through my hands through the years,
and too bad that is, because I'm stunned at what some of these
things sell for NOW! Ah ... ignorance WAS bliss :D

I have this pink lamp that looks very similar to your yellow one K. I thought it was Italian, I took a close up of the glass. This one too, is Czech? It's small at 10 1/2" the glass part only. Mine doesn't work, needs to be rewired, but it's a nice little lamp.

Hi Cathy,

Wow ... our lamps are definately relatives judging by the glass mottling technique, styles, and the brass bases :) I also just measured the glass part and it's the same measurememnt as yours too. I'm glad you posted the pics of it and now maybe we'll both find out more information about our lamps! It would be great to find out for sure who made them and to date them.

You didn't happen to have a shade come with that lamp, did you?

Does anyone know the correct terminology for that "mottling" technique? I just know "mottleing" ain't correct :)

Hi ... I googled for "pink glass lamps" and found this link to a lamp with similar looking "glass colurs/techniques" to our lamps. The link below is a Murano lamp. Although the base brass bottom is different than "our lamps" and theirs better looking quality (?) ... I wonder if ours could be Murano's too?

Yeah, it does look like ours. I wish there was a mark of some sort, my base is missing the bottom cover. I think that's where an ID would have been if there ever was one.

Thanks for finding that link!

The style of that lamp is different to both of yours which are both prob Czech. The chances are that the glass was made to the design of a lighting manufacturer and the fittings would have been added by the them rather than the glassworks. The technique of decoration was widely used everywhere and the only markings you are likely to find are the base makers or the top fitting makers. It might originally have had a stick on label from the lighting manufacturer.
