Title: odd PW with roosters
Post by: Catisfaction on August 19, 2006, 07:04:44 AM
i've got two of these paperweights, this one that's small and another bigger one that's green.
I don't think they're anything majorly special but i like them and would love to pin down a maker or at least country.
They both have ground and polished bases and enough surface wear that they're obviously not old.
Would you call these rooster canes?

Based on the size of the silhouette canes and the spacing of the cane cluster, this looks like Murano from Italy, between 1965 and 1995. I have a scrambled millefiori paperweight with a similar rooster cane from the former Venice glassmaker 3 Fiori. The use of large cane clusters is very typical of Venetian paperweights.

Also, based on other paperweights you've displayed in other posts, you seem to have come across - or have - a collection of Muranos.

Checking out other posts with regard to cockerels on Murano labels, I found this post from Jackie -
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,4804.0.html

re-reading it just now, I noticed she mentioned cockerel murrine created as a protest
Quote from: Jackie

The cockerel was the symbol of Murano when it was independent from Venice ( whose symbol is the lion), and in 1923 there was an outcry when Murano was forced to become part of Venice.  The Glassworks Moretti (and some others) made cockerel murrine and there were many other items featuring the cockerel made at around that time as a protest.

So I wonder if that is what this one is??
