I picked up one of those yesterday, the bottom of his feet weren't shiny, my thought was perhaps Chinese - just didn't seem quite right for Italian, but I could be wrong. The body also seemed quite sophisticated but the beak and feet rather crude

I've got 1 of these in a model of a penguin, not Chinese. I'm a clot as I found the maker and can't for the life of me remember where I wrote it.
I tend to write things down on bits of paper, not good I know.
I'll have a good hunt.

Just to throw it into the mix, there are Charity shops round my way selling new pieces with the same look/technique...

I cant remeber if this bird is part of thier range or not? or where they're getting them from...

I do think this a a new piece, such as one would find in a discount store (Ross or TJ Maxx around here). Some of them have Murano stickers, but some are Chinese (and sometimes I think the ones with Murano stickers might also be Chinese...)

I saw a new one of these along with a penguin and a dog the other day and would say they were most probably Chinese: matt bottoms, spurious air bubbles, generally not very good quality

I saw a bird very similar to this today in the British Heart Foundation shop, but i could be very off the mark
http://britishheartfoundation.sandbag.uk.com/Store/DII-366-1-large+glass+penguin+ornament+.html    Scroll down.

Not exactky the same as the one i saw but will give you an idea, also lots of bubble paperweights and some that looked remarkably like Adam Jablonsk !!

That's the ones I was refering to above...they had a whole range of these in the London area shops 6 months back, but now just have the Adam Jablonski lookalikes, bubble pw's and some clunky solid animals. Every BHF shop has them by the ton and very cheap so I'd expect to see them for many years to come.

I have been thinking about this thread for days because I knew I had seen these somewhere .....I think they are Crystal Clear Collectables....... might be imported by Lesser & Pavey Ltd, ( of Leonardo Giftware fame)but not 100% certain.  There are a few on eBay at the moment, might be worth you looking to see if this is what you have.

If they are, then China is the right answer

Sorry, I can't see how anybody could possibly think these were made by Mike Hunter (Twists Glass) - Mike is an absolutely top class masterglassmaker, there is simply no comparison of quality between these things and Mike's work. Honest!

I have seen these on Ebay being sold as Dino Martens' design.  Dino had nothing to do with this design but I believe the Chinese did.

Hi there

One thing you must be very careful of when it comes to Murano glass is that there are some very good Chinese mass produced items such as these in production still today and after 11 million fake products were sezied in Venice in July of 2010, this only adds fuel to the fire.  When it comes to this piece being from Murano, it is possible but highly unlikely.  The point you mention about the beak being very crude is a clear warning sign that these are Chinese mass produced items and not Murano.  The style for one is indeed in the style of Murano and there are many Chinese glass blowers that actually attend courses held in Venice then take the techniques they see back to their parent companies and produce items such as these.  If it doesn't seem or feel right, then go with your instincts and I can virtually give you a 99.9% back up opinion that this is Chinese and in no way from Murano.   Chinese mass produced items do not have the feel of Murano glass and are sometime quite light to the touch.   I hope my opinion gained from years of experience and as the owner of the largest website in the world devoted to Murano glass is one you may take seriously.

Due to the popularity of Murano art glass figurines, this is the single most important driving factor behind the Chinese glass market.  The figurines aren't bad but simply are no match for the genuine article

I hope this helps - CIAO!

Dean

Yes, Cazza, it is Chinese. These were made in abundance a few years ago. I used to have a link to the picture, but lose all of them when the products in China change.

It is great to have your valuable knowledge Dean....so glad you popped in here.

Mods, this thread and the more recent thread   http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php?topic=42496.new;topicseen#new
are getting entangled, and as they are all 'singing from the same hymn book' might it be useful to merge them somehow?

I  particularly ask this, as there seems to be a new spate of these glass animals and birds showing up on eBay again........
