Title: * Very Usual Murano Colored bowl/Astray
Post by: antiquerose123 on November 15, 2007, 08:01:41 AM
Hi, I have a very usual bowl/ashtray.  It has aventurine swirls inside it, BUT the colors are very contrasting.  It is a very dark blue on the top, while the bottom is a very dark brown.  Very usual colors (I think).  I purchased it at a Flea Market for $3.

It was suggested to me before the contrasting colors (Blue/Brown) was similar to the stark colors used in Van gough painting (Starry Night) of dark blue, and brown.  This was merely a suggestion.

Is it possible this usual color scheme could be a take on that famous artist.  (Artist's are influence by another artist's perception ).  Unknown if this is true, but due to the color combination.....well, could be....who knows....anybody here?  Could this be Toso, or Barbini ?  Any ideas on age/maker/value?

Thanking you in advance.

No replies  :'(
Maybe this is a better pic.  It was very hard to photograph this due to the nature of the extreme dark blue glass, but it is clearly Copper Colored Aventurine swirls in it..........  ( Need better camera too.........hey  :st: )

Any responses ?  Thanks.

Definitely circa 1950s/60s Murano glass, maker unknown. These are usually referred to as "generic" Murano glass, as many companies did similar items. There's a good chance it's by a minor factory that none of us have heard of, but if I had to make a guess I'd say Alfredo Barbini, as I've seen similar items with their lable.

I have been waiting for someone to help me with this.....it does have really nice flow, and is just so usual in the colors.....with the aventurine in it...

Thanks Laura for your help, and for dating it  :kissy:

Hi everyone,
I really do not think Barbini made this piece.
This looks more like a Toso piece, talking about the style.
Have seen this bowl cased in white before, with a Venetian Glass label (the oval and scalloped ones).

Thanks Svazzo.  So glad to see you here.   :hiclp:

Maybe this is a stupid question, but when you refer to Toso piece....to which Toso are you meaning.  Aren't there a few with this name.  And from what year?

Sorry  :spls2: newbie here  :spls2:

Was refering to Fratelli Toso style, with the cased and aventurine spots.
Id say 60s?

Bump....would anyone have a rough estimate of the value of this bowl?  I'm just doing some inventory listing here in my home, for my own records as I now have a display case with some of my pieces in it, and just trying to add some info to it.

Still say these were weird (different) colors for a bowl.......lol...would that make it anymore unusual/price wise?  :kissy:

No idea of the value of the bowl. In today's market, it is hard to know the value of most things. I did want to say that it does not look like Fratelli Toso to me. The swirls go the wrong way and cobalt was not a color they favored. I would call it generic unless I was able to find another like it that had a definite attribution.

I am *bumping* this one up to be re-looked at as I did find another bowl with very similar color as mine.  This other bowl does not have any aventurine in it -- BUT it does have the label of Fratelli Toso, and also the usual same type of color scheme as mine (??).

So I am just bumping this up to have some opinions on my piece (colors) and this other one I found on the Net.  Colors look very much the same....

Other bowl (usual colors too) but with label of FT:

Thanks  :)

From the pics I am assuming there is a thin inner layer of white? My opinion is probably later 50's into the 60's and most likely 'generic' Murano. Value wise would depend on the market at the time. I must admit that even though the colours clash it is quite a nice piece. The shape though does seem odd for one of the better makers in my opinion. You haven't mentioned dimensions as well. I am assuming it is a larger piece in dia?

I mean no offense by the word generic as well. I own quite a few and love them!

I would say $25-$30 would be a good selling price.  The market is soft and bowls are abundant.  For a Murano bowl to push over $100 it would need to be very special, i.e. top designer or good example of a premier maker (e.g. Venini).
