Title: Georgian air twist cordial? glass
Post by: user9318 on October 25, 2012, 12:23:21 PM
Just want to confirm if this is a Georgian era glass (rough date), whether it is a cordial glass or what type of drinking glass it is.

The glass has a convex pontil.

14.1cm tall x 4.2cm top rim diameter x 5.7cm foot diameter

Glass bowl height is 5.2cm approx

if this has a convex pontil (assume you do mean that) as opposed to a depression (concave) - then most unlikely to be Georgian.
However, do tell me if I've misunderstood what you have said :)   Perhaps I'm not seeing too clearly, but the pic is showing a lot of shine in the pontil area.         My personal thoughts are that this is in the style of a wine glass - bowls for cordials tended to be smaller (I think)  -  the foot also appears to be very flat for the C18 ??

The foot edges are flat, then concave towards the middle of the foot, the pontil is convex.

I was told this was a Georgian glass when I purchased it.

 Hi ,
Sorry you have been told this is a Georgian glass, it isn't ,as said before the foot appears flat, you confirm the pontil area is convex also the metal looks too bright and shiny ,also for the proportions of the glass the stem looks too thin to me for an 18thc glass .Many glasses like this were made in the early 20th century in an  18 c style , until you have seen and handled hundreds of period glasses then these can easily lead you to believe they are period.

cheers ,
             Peter.

Thank you Peter for the reply and confirming the age of the glass in question.

Are you sure you mean convex? That is curving outwards, as that would lead me to believe it wasn't a pontil mark at all

Yes, on the foot, at the pontil area / middle area of the foot (where the stem meets the foot) it is convex.

this slightly outward 'bump' is a quite common feature on modern glasses - including some quite high quality pieces, and indicates that the glass in question has not been made in the traditional manner  i.e. by being attached to a pontil rod, and suggests manufacture in the second half of the C20. :)

Thank you Paul for confirmation also of the age of the glass.
