Title: Caithness Vase Signed (CB)
Post by: Gilead on April 14, 2008, 06:10:59 PM
Hello & evening.
today i went to a small market and on a stall i found 3 vases one being this Caithness vase which stands 30cm high an tapers.

On the vase are two fish which i think maybe Trout also there are lots of little dots in between and around the fish i am presuming that these are supposed to be the water reefs but have they been finished ?

also on the base it is signed CB, can anyone tell me whom this is please, and what circa if possible,
                                                                                                                                     Regards
                                                                                                                                      Steve

Shape is called the Straight Vase, you might find it under vases or engraved glass in the catalogues on Scotland's Glass. Colouring varied over the years.

Best to put post in the forum there with a brief text and a link back to this thread there. No point in having the same Q in two places.

There are a lot more still to be uploaded but I don't have time to search through the queue - one day they will all be there  :)

I think your trout are salmon, they're a bit bulky looking for trout. Can you take a close up of the dots, can't see them from here

Christine.
Thank you i thought Salmon, but when had a look on the Scotlands Glass site i could not find it, but found the salmon one, but this look like it as not been finished all the dots around and between the fish look like weed well the out line for them? have taken a couple of pics but not great hope you can see them regards

They're probably OK, just hinting at weed and bubbles

Cheers Andy
Looks like the engraving could have been done by Christine Beaton, as that is the only name i can find which would fit the intials CB and it may have been done by copperwheel.

I can confirm that Christine Beaton was a copperwheel engraver, just added her first weight design:

Hi Frank
Cheers can i ask if you know from when she worked there, or doe's she still work there also do you have any idea when the vase could have been made or engraved, many thanks.
                                                            Steve.

As you may know i am back on line after our move, but still got lots to do to finish the place off not at least go though the boxes of Glass, sometime in the near future.

Not yet, those two were 1976 so by then she had finished training but was probably engraving glass. If Helen (first engraved weight 1978) looks in we might get more data, else we have to wait until more glassware catalogues are available.
