Title: Lovely little signed weight - wild flowers and grasses, but I can't read the sig
Post by: josordoni on February 07, 2007, 06:52:57 PM
Oh dear.  Yet again my ability to read scrawly signatures is very much put to the test and found wanting.

This is a very lovely little paperweight, for some reason I thought it might be American?  I can't read the signature at all.  Because of the background, it is very difficult to even see it on the photo, so I also blew it up and outlined the signature in blue, in case it helped.

It didn't for me, but might for someone more experienced.

Here we are:

http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-4928  paperweight
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-4927  signature and pontil
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-4929 outlined signature

Thanks!

Firstly, I know almost zero about paperweights, but it does bear a passing resemblance to Peter Layton's landscape series.  I don't know how he finishes off paperweights and could be wildly wrong!   :)

Now, its funny you should say that because I looked at the surname, and thought it looked like the way Layton signs, but I couldn't make Peter from the first name.  And I didn't know he made paperweights in that style.

However, they are extraordinarily helpful at the London Glassworks, and have id'd two pieces of his I have had, so I will send pics through - and hope they won't be fed up with me....

What makes you think it is Peter Layton over William Walker?

I don't particularly, Adam.  It was just strange that I had thought Layton, and then thought not  - but then, I have seen a Layton signature, and not a William Walker one.

Add to which I have an email addy for Layton's studio, and not for WW...

Hmmm :) maybe it's time to hone up those Google skills?  :)

Ever been on an Easter Egg treasure hunt? The one where you find a clue that may lead you to the answer? :)

As a matter of interest, how much did you pay for it?

If you like, but I do charge for valuations/attributions!  :) Tell you what...how about a side bet....if someone can prove to you that it is not William Walker, then I'll give you twice what you paid for it and you keep the paperweight....but if it turns out that it is William Walker, then you give it to me!!  ;D ;D

People who have run glass galleries and also ran exhibitions for glass artists, including a certain W Walker, and probably handled more of his work than anyone bar the artist and assistants, should perhaps not be making unfair bets >:D Does the illegality of insider knowledge also cover the art trade.

Why not?

Tiffany expert goes into antiques shop and says:
"How much is the Tiffany vase in the window?"
Dealer replies: "It's not Tiffany, it's a fake"
Tiffany expert replies "Well I think it's Tiffany"
Dealer says I wish it was but it's a modern copy.
Tffany Expert replies: "How much is it?"
Dealer says "$25".
Tiffany expert says I'll take it", and on the way out says "by the way you can find one like this in my book".

Is there a difference? Expert has given the dealer the nod that it is Tiffany. Dealer could have upped the price. Dealer thinks they know better. What more is expert to do? Do you have to publish a book to be an expert?

It wasn't unfair, cos I didn't take him up on it, as I knew he was right!!

and he knew I knew he knew I knew... (thank you Beyond Our Ken...)
