Title: Old-fashioned looking vase, Libochovice 2102 -- Is the designer still unknown?
Post by: Anik R on April 10, 2011, 07:53:23 AM
Hi,

I came home from the antiques market with a Libochovice 2102/185 vase.  It's quite old-fashioned looking compared to most post-war Czech pressed glass, and the base has got a star pattern.

Is the designer of the 2102 vase still unknown?  And do we know when it was first produced?

Thank you for looking.

Anik,
it seems to be old pre-war design, for such pieces we will hardly find the name of designer. One and only very prominent designer was Rudlof Schrötter but his colaborators, sometimes also authors will remain un-named, I am afraid.

I will check it with Mr. Urban tommorow.

I have a couple of pieces in this pattern too and they always seemed to be older styles. I suspect pre-war like Jindrich says, but they don't show in the 1920s Libochovice catalogue, so perhaps date from slightly after that?

Thank you, Jindrich.  It will be interesting to know what Mr. Urban can say about the piece/designer.

Anne, this designed certainly does seem to be an older style... but even if old-fashioned, I do think the designer showed some avant-garde thinking with that up-and-down top rim.  :)

I agree Anik, I think they are really nice! Here is a pic of one of my pieces - pattern 2179 - I haven't taken of a pic of the other yet but it's a smaller one and (from memory) doesn't have the castellated top.

"castellated" -- that's the word I was looking for  :)

Anne, I prefer my vase to yours only because it has a more 'industrial' look.  But they do look pretty in sunlight, don't they?

They reflect the light amazingly!  :sun:

I'm still searching for the bowl that sits on top of this vase when it's the other way up, which makes it into a comport. I've managed to find two different bases but no bowls to fit them... yet!  :wsh:

Mr. Urban says that this pattern (circles + rotated rectangles) is pattern developed by Rudolf Schrötter. He said that these "four horns" at thi top of vase, however looks strange for Schrötter, he said than probably Schrötter s original patern had been modified later by Mr. Hanyka  (I will search more about him shortly).

Anne piece is variation when after the pressing still hot piece had been modified with "opening" of top with rotation.
This patterns had been produced in Libochovice for many years, he remmember that in late sixties a mass of it had been exported somehere.
