Title: John Luxton 1920-2013
Post by: nigel benson on September 29, 2013, 11:46:56 PM
It seems that whenever I drop by it's to impart sad news. I received an email from John Luxton's daughter, Katrina this evening letting me know that John passed away peacefully today, 29 September 2013. She asked me to let as many forums and Association know as posssible.

I am a great fan of his work and remember well that I first met him when he was at The Red Cone talking to the public for an afternoon about Stuart glass. I took a lot of photos of Stuart items with me and he looked at them with some incredulaty that anyone could still be interested in his
designs.

It took while of chatting and coaxing before he would admit anything about his own thoughts concerning his work. We had been going through a huge ledger recording most of the 1960's designs - all of which were his. Frustratingly, he kept pointing out all the traditional things (which I'm afraid do not attract me despite the quality of the workmanship on them) and it was some time
before he let his guard down.

Once he realised I just wanted his thoughts and opinions he began pointing out with great pride a number of the 'true' John Luxton designs where he had not been inhibited by management to
toe the line and produce the safe traditional designs. I went away elated that I had met the man and so chuffed that he had given me so much of his time and help.

On the few occasions we met after that he was such a pleasure to chat to - always greeted with a broad smile.
