Title: Orrefors?
Post by: Della on May 17, 2007, 05:36:31 PM
Hi all,

Could anyone please confirm that this little vase is by Orrefors? It is signed E 2648 to the base, but I cannot find out what sort of date it is from, or who designed it, or even if my instinct is correct.

Ok, I think that I may have the answer myself.
On pg. 218 of Fire & Sea, it says that Styrbjorn Engstrom signed his work with an E. He was at Orrefors in 1970.

Hopefully, if I am incorrect, someone will let me know.

I recognise the bird motif, I have something very similar on a Strömbergshyttan vase.

Thanks, Ivo  ;D

When I saw the vase out of the corner of my eye, my first thoughts were that it was Strömbergshyttan, or Orrefors. Either way, it is a lovely, well-made little vase.

Hi:

Deltab was correct about the glass artist/designer Styrbjörn Engström being at Orrefors in 1970 and using the E.

The difficulty with the signature on the work is it does not have the name Orrefors or Of on the signature and therefore I would say it is not Orrefors. Could be Elme or Eda or Ekenäs.

I have the same vase, although it's not clear whether the penultimate mark is a Y or a 4 (so either E 26Y8 or E 2648). The person I bought it from believed it to be Smalandshyttan. It's bluer than Orrefors but not quite the blue of Strombergshyttan. Lovely little vase, whatever.

Hi David,

Thank you! Another avenue, but at least I know it is Scandinavian.  ;D

As for the 'y' or '4', I used to presume that everything was a lazily written 'y' until I moved to NL. It seems that a 4 in the European countries is written as the 4 under these vases and the children in Holland are taught, at school, to write it in such a way.
