Title: For Reference - Scandinavian Style Hooped Vase = Japanese!
Post by: Wayne on March 26, 2011, 11:51:44 AM
Just posting this here for anyone interested, a vase recently listed on ebay (auction has finished), could easily be thought of as Scandinavian or German, turns out this one has a handy label which reads "Japan".

Ebay item number 360352325828 [Link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360352325828&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT)]

The seller has kindly given permission to post the pics here for future reference:

Here's another one that turned out to be Japanese.  It's cropped up on this board a few times.  Elme of Sweden was suggested, then Hirschberg of Germany, finally found one with a label - Japan!

Comes in a veriety of colours, usually with inner white casing:

That's fantastic! There's a thread discussing vases that seem to be influenced by the Nanny Still designed Rihiimaen "Pompadour" (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,33029.msg178877.html#msg178877) vases, but aren't. Are these the same vases as are being discussed there? It would be great to solve that one!

Edited to add: I'm not sure the vases in that thread are the same as these....

Hi Cathy.  The vase at the start of that thread is a genuine Riihimaen Pompadour, but the discussion brought up these vases for comparison.  I was tempted to put an update in that thread, but wasn't sure if I should, as the original post wasn't one of these vases.

No, I believe the one in the link is not Pompadour - see Robert's post picturing all the Pompadour variations, and px's clarifications. It looks to be another maker again.

My apologies Cathy, you are right, I didn't read the thread fully.  I looked at px's post (reply #8) "The one referred to in this thread is prod.number 1945" and thought it apllied to the original item the thread was posted about.  I should have carried on reading.  :-[

Having another close look at the purple vase mentioned, and the green Japanese vase I found, the design looks to be identical, aside from the purple vase looks thinner (or taller).  I'll make a post in that thread and see what people think.

Interesting.

There's a thread somewhere on the board that has one of these vases bearing a Hirschberg label. I've had one in red marked 'Foreign', which was common for post-war German produce... but it could easily apply to any of the 'losing' sides of WWII wanting to anonymously ship their wares to the old enemy.

Came across another cased vase with white interior which turned out to be Japanese:

The seller was again nice enough to give permission to use their pics here:

Might not be the most exciting discovery the world has ever seen, but it's another ticked off the list!

From my purchases and research (on 20thcenturyglass.com encyclopaedia, worthpoint.com archive, eBay and Etsy) the 8 inch white-cased, 2-section bamboo vases pictured here have been tentatively identified as Chinese, Italian or Japanese and most often sold with a premium as Alsterfors, Sweden, which might leave a logical person confused. Now on your message board we have the photographic evidence of the blue bamboo vase labelled MADE IN JAPAN. Since I have a collection of five of these bamboos (blue, green, yellow, amber & red), and am searching for others to complete the spectrum, I am actually quite excited by this news (yippee!) as I am no longer completely bamboozled.
Since there is a range of 8 inch white-cased long-necked vases in most of the same colour schemes, of similar quality, I think these too are Japanese. I attach a photo showing 4 assorted vases, two of which are in this distinctive dark cobalt/violet blue. The blue one was bought as Empoli [Tuscany, Italy]. Has anyone got labelled examples of the long-necked vases to prove they too are Japanese?
When similar vases are labelled FOREIGN does this mean that they too are made in Japan or just any country that is not part of the British Empire?

Foreign was often used on imports post World War 2 when they came from countries on the losing side such as Germany and Japan so that the buying public were not put off purchasing them.
