Title: Caithness P/W
Post by: chuggy on February 21, 2006, 07:58:25 PM
An old friend came to visit today and brought me this Caithnness P/W which he said had been his late Aunts. It is acid etched to the base Caithness, Mooncrystal, Scotland.
Is Mooncrystal the name of this weight, if so any ideas on date, if not then could anyone ID it for me.

Oh dear this is becoming another collection.

Hi Paul,

Funnily enough, I have the chance to purchase a Mooncrystal paperweight too, so today I have been surfing to find out more.
From what I have found out so far, the Mooncrystal weights come in 5 colours, yours being pink and the one I would like is blue and they are unlimited.

This is the site where I found tons of Caithness items.

All in alphabetical order.

You will see the Mooncrystal weights there.

Thanks Della, I'm going to have to get into these a bit more, but it's just finding the time for everything.

Hi Ray,

Yes, I did notice the prices we very steep, but they do have some great pictures to use for reference. My most expensive Caithness weight, as yet, cost me E20. (I do only have 3 though)
I am following all the posts here and learning a lot. Just fascinating :!:

Thanks ever so much for the Caithness link, Della! I've been trying to find out about non-paperweight Caithness for AGES, and although it doesn't cover nearly as much as I'd like, it's the only place I've seen with any at all! I've managed to find out a fab. oval bowl I have is by Sarah Paterson, though I didn't pay anything like those prices :P .

:P You are very welcome Christine and I know what you mean about finding non-paperweight Caithness.
I spent hours looking on the Internet until I came up with this site.
I know the prices are really up at the top end, but for reference, I thought it was great. Maybe it was just because the weights that I have are Club Collectors weights, but this was the only place I could find them. I didn't even want to find out about them for their value, because I intend to keep them, just to learn a little more for myself. (I can't really afford books yet)
I decided to buy the Mooncrystal weight, the price was too tempting.  :D

Something I'm REALLY starting to regret, was giving a  "Comet" paperweight to the slimeball that conned me into a wedding contract. I seem to remember trying to remove it from his office when signing the divorce papers, but he had a "heavy" in attendance and it was grabbed back from me.

 Sorry I wrote Christine instead of Sue. My apologies.
Not sure why, must have had my sister on my mind.

Hi
Mooncrstal was designed by Colin Terris back in 1977 and they came in Black, Blue, Green, Hyacinth, Pink and Yellow.  The original issue price was £15.00 US $49.50.
Hope this helps regards Tim

As with several Caithness weights, "Mooncrystal" was issued in two styles. The first was in 1985 and was produced in "many colour variations". The later style was in 1997 and as at 2004 was an active unlimited edition. Della was nearly correct in the number of colours - the catalogue book states 6 (Black, Blue, Green, Hyacinth, Pink and Yellow).

Both the earlier and later ones were in Medium (62 mm) and Miniature (54 mm) sizes. [The mm sizes seem not to be given in the 2nd edition of the book, so the ones stated are from the 1st edition.]

From the photo of Paul's weight, I guess that it's a 1997 or later one. But the photos in the book are only b&w and it's not always easy to tell the difference in design styles - as is the case for this one, but the earlier one seems to have a bubble half way up with no higher swirly bits!

 Sorry about the amount of colours, I am just a very, very newbie at this, but 5 out of 6 wasn't too bad.
I am not sure which one mine will be, the earlier or later one, as I haven't got it yet and have only seen a photo from above.

I didn't pay anywhere near 15 pounds for mine, including delivery, so I am quite happy. :)

Still, I am a little confused :?  one says 1977 and one 1985, who is correct?

Tim's reply went up as I was preparing my own. I am pretty sure Tim's date was a typo - should be 1997. The Original Issue Price of the 1985 version was £9.95 / US $30.00

My Mooncrystal weight came today, it is the green one, not blue, but I like it anyhow.

I am not actually sure how one measures a paperweight. If it is determined by height, then this one is a minature. If determined by width, then it is a medium.

Convention is diameter for normal shaped weights and height for uprights, though some give every possible dimension and weight.
