Title: Large pressed glass Art Deco bowl with demountable birds = Brockwitz Fortuna
Post by: RoynMargaret on July 31, 2006, 10:48:22 PM
Having decided once before to sell her collection of Victorian and Art Deco glass in favour of the more voluptuous and exotic creations from Murano & elsewhere, every now and again Margaret reverts to type - and buys something very Deco. Then she says "see what you can find out about it."

Well, so far I can say positively it <b>is</b> glass and it is brown/amber and  would agree it probably is Deco and 1930s. Apart from that, I have chased all over the Internet and come up with ... zilch.

It is a very heavy 14-in diameter bowl with four moulded demountable acid-etched/frosted birds. No marks. Any ideas as to maker and date please?

Pamela has a picture of the Brockwitz Fortuna bowl with three little feet on her wonderful Pressed Glass Pavilion website, but hers does not have the birds: http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/schalen/01126.html

Roy, Can I ask please, how do the birds fit onto the bowl? Do they just sit on the rim or is there a way of stopping them falling off?

Pegs in holes, you can see one of the pegs in the above pic. Shows better in the sea-lions one.

Ah yes, now you point them out I can see the pegs just sticking out. Thanks Frank. :)  I just rechecked and Pamela's bowl doesn't have holes for pegs, so presumably some bowls were meant to have birds and others weren't.

and some were meant to have dolphins... we do not know particularly, that these are Brockwitz - but I do think so    8)

Fascinating, thank you Pamela. If I see a bowl with holes in I shall now know what they are meant for.  8)

 :chky:  :rah:

Many moons ago, Margaret and Roy were kind enough to donate this lovely amber bowl with birds to my museum -
here is finally the proof of it being made by Brockwitz!

Also Barbara in Australia was kind enough to let me have photos of her blue set here:

And here are images of the green centerpiece, courtesy of Jim and Jacky:

Thank you all so much again  :kissy:

Lovely to see the other colours. It does appear to be an accident-prone set: The blue bowl has been in pieces and the green birds are reglued. Our amber birds were without some wings or tails.

We never knew about the centrepiece column/flower frog

Hello Everyone,
Have just read this - how wonderful to see the bowl in a catalogue confirming that it is  Brockwitz. I was surprised to see it with the Lady flower frog centrepiece though,  and viewing the green one on Pamela's site there appears to be 2 different bowl sizes. I must admit the bird flower frog I have does seem too small for the bowl. Mine is the blue bowl that has been in pieces shown on Pamela's site - It was in perfect condition when Nige posted to me and despite wonderful packing it didn't make it to Australia in one piece - I couldn't bear to toss it out so I glued it back together!
Any thoughts that the bird flower frog may be for the smaller bowl and the lady flower frog for the large bowl?

With Thanks,
Barb.

:hiclp: Barb, very good eyes!  :girlcheer:

Your blue and my amber have got  SEVEN  (http://pressglas-pavillon.de/tafelaufsaetze/09283.html) hexagons between the birds, whereas Jim's green shows  SIX  (http://pressglas-pavillon.de/tafelaufsaetze/09637.html) only.
Sadly the buyer of it wasn't happy with his purchase    :thud:  :grrr:

It is obvious that Brockwitz made a second smaller set with that column plus a fifth bird.

Here's the complete set (less plinth) as shown in  Brockwitz Farbentafel  (http://www.glas-musterbuch.de/Brockwitz-circa-1936-Farbent.180+B6YmFja1BJRD0xODAmcHJvZHVjdElEPTc1OTImcGlkX3Byb2R1Y3Q9MTgwJmRldGFpbD0_.0.html), bowl and birds donated by Margaret and Roy:

Hi Pamela,

Thank you  :rah:  I hadn't noticed that there were 7 in the large bowl and 6 in the small, and it gets better - do you think the birds that sit in the edge are 2 different sizes too? The birds I have are quite a bit bigger than the flower frog figure....
I love this set but I guess it means I am now on the look out for twice as much glass!!  :thud:

Thanks again Pamela for all your hard work and sharing your knowledge.

Best Regards,
Barb.

Hi all
If it helps, the large bowl we sent to Pamela's museum was approx 36cm diameter. We are sure the birds are original and could be measured (Pamela?)

Hi Pamela, Roy and Margaret,

I've just had the ruler out on my set - large bowl approx 35cm dia , the birds sitting on the side - beak to tail approx 9cm and the bird on the flower frog approx 6cm.

Regards,

Barb.

 :hi:
same as mine: approx 9 cms for the birds and 35 cms for the bowl, as illustrated in the catalogue.

checked Jim's photos again: the green birds sitting on the side look as small as the one in the center.

Jim's green bowl measured 10.5" only...

 sad it's gone elsewhere and where it's not treasured  :-X

Hi Pamela,

Yes I agree, I've been looking at the photo as well. The bird on the flower frog is quite dainty really and would look wonderful with matching size ones around the bowl. Perhaps the buyer of the green may list the set for sale in the future - one to keep an eye out for!

Best Regards,
Barb.
