Thank you, its a piece of Weinman 8/500 i brought back from New York last year its looks great when its behind a spot light.

The pussy cat has been eaten by a green mouse.LOL. I think it could be from Pilkintons but not sure as i have not posted it as yet. It has a flat polished base and is rather sweet. When its ready for a new home i will point its nose in your direction if thats alright

Just getting to grips with camera, picassa, etc etc....So a view of my bathroom glass.. the red vases hold jewelery and the Bling vase holds soaps... G thought the Bling present very  :24: :24: :24: I was not amused, wanted a piece by Vic Bamforth really.

I've got a link (I think) to some of my glass established...any help with attributions gratefully received.    :hat: still need to wear the dunces hat.  All this technical stuff is such hard work.   :ow:

since most of my pieces are either in the loft, sheds or hidden somewhere in cabinets - I have to get them out for the David Bailey bit  -  and then the background lets me down  -  nowhere near as interesting as other people's.      Time was I had buckets full of water jugs, but they take up a lot of space, so slowly but surely they have been given the elbow, leaving just the few that you see.    I know most of the makes (or thought I did).......couple of W/Fs. (plus the W/Fs. for Asprey??) Jacobean, Borske, Pearline, Libochovice, and possibly even Moser/Kralik  -   and have probably now forgotten some.   Apart from the Pearline, they were all from boot sales, so not great outlay, and if you wanted a colourful display they make a great show.   Date wise, I think the deep green one is possibly late C19 with the W/Fs. ruby ice jug the most recent.    If I'm wrong there, please tell me.         And yes, there is one design twice  -  it's the only time I've bought the same pattern twice, and it was today!!!!  :pb:

thanks Keith  -  and you may well be correct.         My jug has a substantial and very good quality ground/polished out pontil mark, and the piece has one of those 'rings' to die for.      Unfortunately, completely unmarked.       But bothers me not a little that there is very little wear on the underside of the foot - and I do so like to see reasonable wear if I'm going to say that something is at least half a century old, but always exceptions to the rule of course. :)

A very nice display Paul....is the 'brandy glass' one Scandinavian??

Keith does that vase have an inscription on the base at about 5 o clock in the photo??  If so, what does it say please.

rosie  -  assume you mean the ice decanter (the final pic. on row 4)  -  and the answer is, no............this is the piece attributed to W/Fs. manufacture, and carries the word 'Asprey' as an acid back stamp.     My thanks to jp for this attribution/provenance, some time earlier last year I believe.

Believe this piece that Keith has shown is his 'Celery' that he posted some few days ago. and the writing that can be seen on the foot is the word Celery............am I correct Keith??

Thanks for that info Paul....howinteresting...an ice decanter...I will have to look out for one of those.

Now I know why I had Déjà vu about it.....I have a picture memory you see, so once I have seen something, I can carry the colour and shape in my head for ever....my 'remembery' is starting to get a bit full now though. Not so, my forgettery!

sorry, think our posts have crossed, but do read this one which corrects my errors..............

"just for the record, two small corrections to technical errors on my part.      This bird standing on one foot is not, of course, a decanter whatsoever  -  it's simply another water jug. :pb:      Like the W/Fs. ruby example, the lip does, however, prevent the ice cubes rushing out and bathing you in whatever drink you did have in your glass.
Correctly, an ice decanter/carafe  -  is a piece which has a self-contained tube-like housing which projects into the body of the decanter, and into which you put ice.    This method of using the ice keeps it completely separate from the main liquid that is being drunk  -  but does keep it cold for when needed.    The housing for the ice is protected often, by means of a cork 'bung'  -  and on posh examples this may be capped with silver/plate".

hope this clarifies things for you.      I can only think that these Asprey pieces are fairly uncommon  -  I don't recall seeing another. :)   jp commented that he thinks they are an investment for the future. ;)

Thanks Paul.....a jug by any other name....as they say, and who would want their drink slopped into their lap, or have their wine cooled and diluted at the same time?  I have seen the decanters you have described, and so I know exactly what you mean.

Did you see the picture I put on this thread earlier of my 'collection' of jugs?  There are a couple of them I would love to know more about....want to help?

Also, perhaps you can throw some light on a pattern of pressed glass we had in the 50's in E. Africa.  It was standard issue to the Overseas Food Corporation (Groundnut Scheme). The pattern was like an upturned curved sided triangle with small diamond patterning within the triangle and the remainder of the body of the jug was stippled to give a frosted appearance. I had a feeling it might have had a Scandi sounding name, albeit probably a British glass item. Does that help? :sun:

at work just now, so can' really comment in depth rosie.          ID's for jugs can be very difficult, especially as most are unmarked  -  although if you have a Rd. No. then you're half way there, or perhaps an iconic shape or colour can help.        I've seen hundreds on my travels, and brought many home, only to get nowhere with them, and eventually they've been given away.
I probably did see your 'jugs', but have forgotten which page  -  are you able to refresh my memory  -  although to be honest, don't hold out too much hope of attribution: I think that with glass it's often better if you have a philosophy of low expectation  .....it saves too much disappointment :)    But will look again.
Re E. Africa.......I cud be wrong completely, but your description of the relief pattern sounds vaguely like the 'pineapple/fir cone/scale' design - possibly - which we have had here previously  -  and on that occasion I think the manufacturer was Canning Town.    Have a look at the link http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,37092.msg202577.html#msg202577   -  but its only a shot in the dark.        Date wise, an outfit like Canning Town would have been manufacturing at about the right time, and their proximity to London might have made them a contender. :)

Sorry Paul,  didn't mean to bother you at work.....

When you have time:-
I have just found one of the jugs on eBay.....I can't believe how like my description it is, bearing in mind I haven't seen one since I was about 12 years old.
Here is the link:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-glass-water-jug-/140525213205?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item20b7f49615

It doesn't give the name, but looking at it, I think it might be a bit cheap and nasty....
I might get it for nostalgia's sake!

I really love Peill & Putzler vase designs, especially the ones from the 60s-70s, but even the later ones strike a chord. I've already made up my mind this year to make P&P one of my specialized areas of glass collecting, spending a little more than usual to pick up the better ones.

I'm especially happy with the relatively newly acquired textured vase on the right of the middle picture (I suspect it's by Horst Tüselmann). No picture manages to do it justice (making it a very positive surpise when it arrived, as I hadn't seen it 'live'). It's a thickwalled vase, and the pattern is made by very deep etching (I think), making little canyons deep in the surface giving it it's pattern effect. It's an extremely tactile piece. When I just bought it, every time I walked past it, I had to 'caress' it to feel the tectile structure of it. I'm sooo happy with that one!  :smg:

I'm also tactile, so I know what you mean about caressing your glass, Astrid.  :)

I love the vases in your first picture -- the third and second from the right.  Then again, I think all your P&P vases are wonderful (with the exception of the white and clear 'swirly' one in the first photo -- too delicate-looking for my taste.)  Unfortunately, I still have a very hard time recognizing German glass, regardless of the glassworks, so my collection is extremely limited.

Once again, fantastic collection!  :hi:

Actually, Peill & Putzler glass is really easy to identify. They nearly always have a double P etchmark on the base or on the outside near the base. It's not always easy to see, but once you're a bit familiar with the style of the glass, you'll start looking for it almost automatically. The factory was located in Düren, West Germany, and they took over the Weisswasser Bärenhütte in East Germany in the nineties. I'm not sure what that will mean for your chances of finding some for yourself, Anik.

Astrid, you're right!  The only Peill piece I've got is a 'schleiergraphit' vase...  It's got a label, but though I've had the vase for well over a year, I never noticed the (very faint) double P etchmark at the base!!!  This is very exciting. ;D

(Actually, when I looked, I couldn't find any etchmark... so my son started looking and finally yelled "I found an apple mark!" -- The double P does look like an upsidedown apple.  :))

Might it be possible to see a pic of the PP mark, so we all know what we are looking for?

Astrid, I keep going back and looking at your display....it is so 'tranquil and pure' in the way you have arranged them...I love pale creams, white and particularly satinised or frosted glass.

Well, it was Government Issue Christine, for the Overseas Food Corporation, so we wouldn't expect luxury.  We had Tumblers and sundae dishes as well, so there's posh!! :sun:.
The pattern was called Nordic....I think??, a Scandi-sounding name.

just thought I'd bore you all with a few tankards - can't remember if any have been posted yet.       Don't know if the small indentation at the top of the handle is unique to Davidson, but appears on my examples, and in the book, so cud be a good indicator of origin if all else fails.   The green piece (Silver Jubilee of George V) is Sowerby (it carries the peacock's head), but sadly not U.        Possibly the poorest quality piece of glass is No. 2 in pic. 2 - which is Ravenhead...very rough and ready.   The shorter Midnight piece is an FT 5  - but still no wiser on the other Midnight one, although the handle shape looked a bit 'Wedgwood  ish'.       The large clear piece in pic. 3 is again Davidson, and was their first design to be registered both in the UK and Australia (1938) -  it carries both Nos.............but why doesn't my example show the 'PINT TO RIM'  and 'G R', as shown in the book??

It's april, and time to change the themed display again! My new display is Skrdlovice (or Beranek glass) themed - at least the majority I'm pretty sure of. Two pieces I haven't managed to attribute with certainty yet, that's the purple brown vase on the far left of the second picture and the clear one with lobes on the right of that picture. These lobes look Czech to me, but perhaps it's Scandi or something else entirely.

Eeek!  Now I'm embarrassed!   :-[   It's only three little pieces of pressed glass, all with a 'nautical' theme   ;D  Now that I look at it, I'm sure there's room for more there actually  >:D

And I realised I had forgotten the spare room - I have a couple of cabinets in there, one of which is mainly pink and blue glass, so I took a pic of that while I was upstairs 'doing' one of the bathroom   ::)

That's quite enough from me now, I think  :wsh:

Thanks to this thread I've actually moved a few pieces of my glass to the bathroom, where previously there was none (except for the stained glass windows)  ;D

The bathroom is one of several places I don't have any glass (with the exception of the mirror  :usd:)...  but because of the joys of having the rotavirus, I've had several days of quality time, bonding with my toilet.  In the process, I found the perfect place to put up two shelves to display some glass.

Since my husband complains that everything around us (all the rooms except for my nasty blue bedroom) is white, beige and brown, I thought he'd love my idea with the shelves -- by placing some lovely blue and green glass, it would give the off-white bathroom a happy injection of colour.

He was not impressed. >:(

Maybe I should have suggested pink glass instead?

P.S.  Leni, that's a beautiful stained glass window!

Astrid,  your displays always look so fresh, clean and uncluttered....

I'm very flattered, Rosie - and I have to admit in my case it's just the living room I'm keeping sort of uncluttered by selection. Upstairs in my workroom that doubles as storage space, it's a different matter entirely! My desk is always full. The half that is close to the computer is full with glass books I haven't put back yet and the other half is full with recent acquisitions I haven't found a storage space for yet :)

Besides, I don't have so much Skrdlovice yet that it could look cluttered  ;D

If he likes the bathroom window, let me show off the one on the landing - with the excuse that some of my collection of Chinese paperweights are on the window sill  ;D

OK, now I think that's really enough from me!  ::)  :pb:

And I agree with everyone else that Leni's stained glass windows looks so stunning. Wow. Was it already part of the house, Leni, or did you put them in yourself?

They were original with the house - one of the main reasons we bought it!  :D  Each of the houses in the road had alternately a picture window, like ours, or a geometric 'Art Deco' design.  Lots of people have removed the original windows when they fitted double glazing, but we actually had them repaired and put in a double glazed 'sandwich' - so they are in effect triple glazed!  But it was expensive, costing as much as all the double glazing in the whole of the rest of the house!  :thud:   :spls:  But worth it, I think  ;D

Here's the third (and final) one - beside the front door.

Two great combinations, Astrid, great pieces enhancing each other.  Leni, the stained glass windows are wonderful. I can see why they would influence your choice of house.

They are all beautiful Leni, and well worth paying for.  Our previous house was Arts and Crafts, and I fell in love with it just for the windows.....hooped lead lights, so pretty.  I can't imagine we would ever have got rid of them. and now we live in a very square house with boring windows,  but we bought the house for the view!!  :sun:

Leni, your windows are simply beautiful!

Astrid, I'm curious... how long have you been making themed glass displays by your front window sill? How and when do you decide which theme will be next?  And have you ever repeated a theme?  Ah, so many questions...

Astrid, I'm curious... how long have you been making themed glass displays by your front window sill? How and when do you decide which theme will be next?  And have you ever repeated a theme?  Ah, so many questions...

Anik - let's see. I've started collecting in january 2010, and at first I could place everything I had on the front and back. No need for display choices obviously. Around may I had acquired so much that I had to move some of it to my workroom upstairs. At first I just kept the best pieces downstairs. I think my first themed display was in June, when I had too many nice pieces and had to start making choices. I think I was also influenced by Hans (of the artglass Leiden website), who I visited to pick up some pieces he sold me. He rents a seperate storage space and once every half year he changes his display at home (he has one (or two?) large display walls with lights in it, very beautiful).

Since I had a few nice new ones in the colours blue or green, I decided to make a display in aqua and green. Green for spring and blue for the summer. Then in July I added cobalt and removed green - that had more of sea summer feel. August I wanted some multicoloured pieces out, especially my Rhapsody pieces, so I made a display where all the vases were clear with additional colours. I made a pink and red display in september for contrast (and because I hadn't seen those pieces in a while). October I wanted autumn colours (brown, amber, orange, red) and november was my first origin theme, when I had enough pressed Czech glass to fill a window sil. In december I went back to colour theme with black, white and clear for winter.

I think about my themes beforehand, but often it's only on the changing day that I make a final decision. It may be that I recently acquired something that I really want on display and just make up a theme that fits it (like the Big is Beautiful theme of february). With the theme of april, Skrdlovice, the reason was that with the big blue bowl shape I think I had acquired just enough of it to fill a window sill. The Peill at the back was made because the back window sill up till the Peill display was extremely cluttered with clear glass, and I needed to make choices in that area, and the Peill ones are my favourites so far. If I change it, it might be a Nachtmann display. I'm getting there with the number of pieces needed, and I want my Slice vase out on display soon :).

Themes can be made around any aspect of my vases: type, colour, technique used, shape, size, time period, designer or factory. I was only partly focused for most of 2010, so I have lots of relatively cheaper pieces rather than a few very beautiful exclusive ones, which provides a need to change often (and I really need to sell some of it, I think, now that I have acquired a bit more focus, though I dread having to start with all that).

I haven't repeated a theme yet, though some vases come back in several theme. A big Vladislav Urban vase in blue fitted my blue-green, my blue-cobalt and my pressed Czech. One of my Big is Beautiful vases is now in my Peill display at the back.

I must share this, a neighbour has just popped in for a  :t:, only to find me oooing and aaaring over other peoples displays of glass on my computer.... I had to laugh as the thought of all the GMB folk far and wide doing the same thing really tickled me....... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D   :rah:  Now I'm off to hide this weeks purchases before I go to the Reghed antique fair in Penrith tomorrow.  Perhaps we should have a GMB badge, or something, so we can recognise other glassaholics at these venues.   :hi:

Astrid, thank you for taking the time to reply to my questions!  :kissy:

But I really can't believe you've only been collecting glass since January 2010  :thud:...  that's just a couple months longer than me, and your Picasa albums are so much larger than mine.  I am jealous, especially of your German collection and many of your Czech pieces.  But I like you anyway.  ;)

Unfortunately, I don't have any storage space for my glass -- that's the problem of living in a flat with no attic, no shed, an unusable cellar, and little wardrobe space.  Everything I have finds a home on display, somewhere, but it's getting more and more difficult for me to make things look neat and tidy on my shelves.   I have no idea what our home will look like in a few months as I certainly don't plan on giving up collecting glass.

this is great for the novice to see so much glass together for many reasons, especially the mingling of the new one with the already there ones( I though I was the only one who relied on Hbsd bad memory).  but moreso to see the peices  'living " so to speak.  Its a reference site itself.  Thanks

Well my wife nixed the Danish Glass display - "something brighter" she who must be obeyed, said.  So here comes the Kosta Boda themed display.

Above - includes my first bit of KB the Galaxy Red vase - a gift from a visitor I had run around for a few days.  Bigger bits

Top Shelf - The special bit is the PWt third from the left.  It has Goran Warff's personal signature and he also signed it Melbourne(where I live).  About 8 designers represented.

Middle Shelf - I think all are Bertil Vallien designs (maybe the U vase is not).  The Network bowl is not signed.

Bottom Shelf - I particularly like the Warff bowl at the centre back - even though it is dull here - you can see a better photo at http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/albums/userpics/10901/thumb_Dish_-_backlit.jpg .  I also am partial to the Boda biomorphics - of which I show four here.  I would love to find out the designer & approximate date of manufacture.  Shown are BODA 2349/1  2349/3   2395/2  2295 and I also have 2380/1 & 2380/3.

Enjoy.

Ross

Wow!  Lovely items Leni.  I particularly like the small vases and the two Pwts near the large amber vase - who made them.

Rosie - there is still Orrefors, Sundry Scandi, Murano, Whitefriars(part), USA/Canada(part), and perhaps an Australian/NZ display or two.  I am having the fun of seeing so many of those loved pieces that have been "in the garage" for far too long.  Come to think of it a Stuart Crystal, Webb/Webb&Corbett, etc.   A piece from every country - would be 22 or 23 countries - pick some larger pieces and that could make an interesting display.  I have lots of potential - I will start planning a new one ASAP.

Ross

PS.  I am attaching a decent photo of my 2 favourite Warff items.

So here comes the Kosta Boda themed display.

Aaaaaah, how nice to see a Kosta Boda display like that. When I first started collecting, I was drooling over newly available Kosta Boda pieces (especially the Göran Wharff ones were gorgeous) at my local art glass shop. But the prices were so not my budget, that I gave up after getting one little Anna Ehrer Atoll candle holder.

Thanks for sharing it, Ross!

I like the yellow/uranium sort of triple ogee vase/bowl on Leni's window sill  -  might it be Webb Leni?? :)      I managed to get another display cabinet into the house recently -don't know how - and had a hectic time moving furniture around in 'my room' to accommodate the piece.   Have loaded it with British pieces  -  then there's the triple doored cabinet, now in such a mess (with glass sitting inside glass) that I call it eclectic.      Then the last pic. shows two pieces from  Mr. Baxter, no doubt collecting a lot of d.....
And I still have one more small cabinet to fill, but despite sleepless nights I really don't know where to put it  -  My OH says you can have too much of a good thing, and it should go out into the shed...............  :o

Oooh!  You have some lovely glass there, Paul!  :hiclp:  And I do understand the "Where to put another cabinet?" problem only too well!  ::)  ;D

Yes, my bowl is Webb 'Sunshine Amber' - discussed in this thread http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,37484.0.html  :D

I only quite recently started putting glass inside other glass, so I guess I've still got a way to go yet, although my OH has long given up on the "You can have too much of a good thing" line   :24:  :pb:

The "vase" on the right of Leni's unusual picture piece is not a vase Paul, - it's a "Spectrum" sculpture by Nikki Williams - Kinkiglass. I suspect the piece on the left is our Adam Aaronson.
I want to know what the picture piece is, Leni, and why I've not seen it before! :-*

The horsey vase is I believe, Malcolm Sutcliffe, and the blue plate is by Allister Malcolm.

50% for you, Sue  ;)  Yes, the sculpture is Nikki Williams of Kinki Glass, and the blue plate is Allister Malcolm, but the vase on the left isn't Adam's, it's by Michele Luzoro.  And the horsey vase is by Ed and Margaret Burke - it's blown by Ed, and the dark overlay is cut back to the coloured glass by Margaret!

The bowl on the left of centre is by AVeM, and the centre piece is a papier mache carnival mask from Venice  ;D

Thank-you, Ross - that vase was one of the occassions I just couldn't resist a bit of early American Studio Glass!
The "sea" bit at the base goes in very deep indeed - this simply does not show up in a photograph. There are three different moons around it, and it has the tiniest silly little hole at the top - you might manage to squeeze a single stem into it, but I honestly don't understand why anybody would want to.
Sergio - I believe Indiana Glass is an American company - but I don't know if it's in Indiana.

Rosie - so many ducks  :thud: - and not one of them wfs - well done!

No, not Mc Donald,  I was a Jolly 'Miller'. Ross!!

If I was going to 'do' a farmyard,  I would have to include a load of others,  and so I tried to stick to Easter animals...... ;D'

I love the glass plate as well, and the choclate eggs on it!!

Sue yours are all so beautiful,  but I really like the 'egg' vase.  ;D

I wonder how many pieces of glass we have between us all...........Could we make a million do you think????? :sun:

I think Sergio is better at telling punning jokes than we are  -  but I think you were lucky Sergio to find a plate that would accommodate Easter Eggs.   And Sue,  I don't see how you would get Oysters into those recesses; wouldn't the shells be too big, and scratch the plate.      My eclectic clock is probably worth more than some of my glass - it's an original 'Metamec' -a retro thingy from the 60's I guess. ;)

Yes Sergio, Indiana Glass, USA. My mother has one in marigold, they are super for Easter eggs!

Lovely, lovely collection, Rosie  :hiclp:   :kissy:  Love those ducks and other animals!  I especially like the brown 'bunny'   He looks more like a hare than a rabbit to me - don't forget that the Easter (should be Oestre) 'bunny' :anb: was actually a hare! (http://www.websmileys.com/sm/animal/1.gif)

Thanks Leni,  the 'bunny' was the topic of investigation on the GMB a few months ago....still not a definative ID yet.....got any ideas??

After I posted all the pictures,  I found some more rabbits and a forlorn duck that felt very left out of the picture!! I think they move around at night as I can't always find the ones I am looking for! ;)

One from me -- not really themed, just more or less cylindrical shapes.
Mostly Tamara Aladin, mixed with 2 of my best Czech pieces, plus 1 Murano (at least we assumed that here on the GMB :))

I thought you might be amused by this.. We're having half of the house extended (including installing glass cabinets and shelves along a very large wall), and have had to clear out all of the furniture from that section. I packed up most of the glass into strong crystal boxes (about forty of them), but then was left with the melon ribs, some of which were so big that each would occupy a box on their own. The smaller pieces, about half the collection, are in a couple of boxes, but I just couldn't bring myself to package all the larger ones up! So, I've packed up most of our kitchen ware, moved the cups, plates and bowls and shifted half of the melon ribs into the kitchen cupboards. Priorities! :)

Also a shot of a side table in the dining area...

Since it's the first of May, I changed my front display with a number of vases where cutting techniques were used (or at least - I think they were cut in some fashion. I'm not entirely sure whether the two frosted-and-clear ones (probably Nachtmann) were (hand)cut or not).

Still musing on a good name. 'No cuts no glory' perhaps, or I'll just stuck with 'the cut glass display'.

Ha, depends on how 'the rest' is defined, Rosie. It certainly wouldn't be the rest of the GMB members :).

I adore that P&P too, Anik. I'm sure I've said it before but I do wish I could find more of that series, but so far no luck.

Though I did manage to add 3 very beautiful other P&P's to my collection this week. I was especially thrilled to finally have a Patmos. I exchanged it in my current P&P display for the cut green one that I moved into this months may theme. Just a seperate picture of my Patmos, then, because I'm so happy, yeah!  :girlcheer:

For the onlookers: the beauty of the Patmos design is that the small little square clear bits are not cut into the vase - the rest of the vase has been etched out around them and they are the bits sticking out (as usual for etched Peill work from that period - always the other way around from what you would expect).

Very tasteful and beautiful display. Who did the red piece in the second picture. I looked at your Picasa file and didn't see it there.

This thread has made me think about changing how I display my glass. I'm going to put in some shelves in another room just for glass and look at getting a big light box made for behind my main cabinet.

Your Patmos vase is terribly interesting -- how lovely it must be to run your fingers over the body.  By the way, I'm so happy to read about your excitement.  I love when people show their enthusiasm for a newly acquired piece.  :kissy:

David, the red vase was discussed a bit earlier, here:  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,39034.0.html It's Beyer & Co.

David, the red piece in the the second picture is in my collection of German glass on Picasa (somewhere in the middle, but that collection is getting quite big. Maybe I should spllit off the solifleurs and the Peill & Putler and give them a separate album).

It is by the German firm of Beyer & Co, 60s-70s. Sadly, I don't know who designed it. It was for many people the one piece they couldn't quite identify in the 'Oh no, that's not Murano!' quiz I put up in March :)

Ah - just then I noticed Anik had already answered your question...

Michael, flowers in a glass vase AND water?  :thud:

Very decadent, indeed.

P.S.  Thank you for making me laugh at my own ridiculousness...  I got a lovely little bunch of flowers from my Dad and decided to display them in a Krosno drinking glass only because I had 'no other vase'.  In fact, I've got well over 60 vases in my home.   ::)

Michael, I honestly did try putting my flowers into the little Drost vase, but the bunch was too big.  That's why I settled for a Krosno glass.  I think I'd have a very hard time using any of my Czech vases for their intended purpose though... (http://www.sympato.ch/smileys/Glups.gif)

It's wonderful that you use your pieces.  I really am in awe, but the thought of you using your ashtrays makes me shiver -- I know what my Luminarc ashtray looks like after butting-out in it for some time.  It certainly ain't pretty.

Looking at a very recent uranium glass post, it struck me how varied the daylight colours can be.........so here are some colour variations, and you will have to take my word for it that they do all glow.    Won't itemize them all, but just to say they include Bagley, Webbs, R/Brierley (possibly), J. Derbyshire (the tall goblet in pic. two), Davidson, Richardson, Baccarat, Jobling (jade), S. Reich, Percival Vickers (possibly) and Stevens & Williams (possibly), and of course there are some I will never know.   The two squat yellowish necked vases are possibly unused cameo blanks, and you can see the goblet in Cyril Manley's book on page 102 (if only it actually was that one ;)).     I have posted the globular crimson streaked bowl before, but it remained uncommented on.    It is very unusual, and had it not been uranium cud possibly have been Scottish Clutha  -  I've seen pieces of dull green in the V. & A. with this almost blood red streaking  -  but I think it might be Continental.    Anyone like to have another stab at it?

Lovely. I think the range of uranium colours and shades of colours is fascinating (but then you probably guessed that) and I could add a few more, though you have some I don't have. Which is the Bagley?

sorry, not a very good start - going from memory I thought it was the small deco ish style tumbler just to the front left of the large S. Reich water jug.    It isn't, of course, and carries a Jobling No. 783048.    In fact the only piece of Bagley uranium that I can now remember positively, was a rather nice 'Carnival' pattern biscuit barrel (with lid)  -  but I'm fairly certain that piece was given the elbow in one of my regular clearouts - although it cud be in one of the sheds somewhere.    So apologies, please delete Bagley.

Paul:  Your canoe with the daisy and button pattern (original name:  No. 101 Daisy and Button) was made by Hobbs, Brockunier and Co.  in Wheeling West Virginia USA and was originally advertised in Oct. 1884.  It is a pickle dish.  (By the way, I love the sunshine amber uranium glass, too!)

rosie - no wasn't me re buying your glass - to date I've not made a single purchase from ebay - wouldn't dare go down that road  -  I acquire too much as it is!
Dave -  appreciate the help with attribution - and must admit I hadn't a clue who produced the canoe, so very grateful for information.

just out of interest, I suspect that the 'chrysoprase' (the two opaque green vases) are the oldest by some way.........don't think they have the quality of Baccarat, so I'll go with Harrochov (possibly) sometime around 1830  -  1850  ish.....I think more likely Bohemian than French in view of the gold decoration (albeit somewhat worn).     However, I don't take a serious interest in uranium glass, and am more than happy to be corrected by the more knowedgable. :)

I forgot the 'rubina verde' - and shud also have included the opaque Fenton lime greenish 'shoe'  -  but suspect you all remember them from earlier posts anyway. :)

I have always collected mostly clear Victorian pressed glass.

A very small part of my collection on display I have well over 100 pieces .
I can find it very easily and for mostly small money and could add to it most weeks if I wanted , and I still use many of the items

Roy, they look fab against the dark wood.  I'm not a huge fan of pressed glass, but I have a few clear pieces given me by my aunt and I use them at Christmas - somehow they just hit the right note, I can't imagine serving cranberry sauce in anything other than a frilly clear pressed glass bowl  :)

Suzy those are wonderful pieces - I would be very happy to have any of them in my collection.  I like the irridescent swirls particularly.

Absolutely great presentation.

Hi all,

Loving this thread, I have been collecting glass for a number of years but my main collection is Whitefriar's but over the last year or two have been collecting Mdina and Isle of Wight. I have attached a picture of one corner of my Mdina collection, these are mainly fish/axe head vase's (my favourite) and some later IOW perfume bottles. I have another room with sculptures and early IOW. I also collect Exbor fish and animals. It's starting to become an obsession.

Will try and post some more pictures later.

Oh........ growl!
You have a Crizzle Stone, and I don't know if it's one that has already been counted or not!
Whatever, it must be around 30 odd, by now.

Nice amethyst textured rectangular bottle. Scarce beastie - it is an unusual shape to find - even more so in amethyst!

There are getting just too many Mdina collectors now - it's all competition for the good stuff - go away, all of you, it's MINE! :tsk:

The Onion looks like one I've already seen, is it signed by Dobson? When the book was written, it was believed that Onions were very scarce. Then a "load" of them came out of the woodwork just after the book got published - so the "given" info was that they are not nearly as scarce as first thought.
However, the "glut" of them very quickly dried up.

And there's a small textured pot in amethyst.......

:spls: Do you not think Jimbo is stamping on our toes, John?  :thud:

Thanks for the kind comments. The onion is signed Dobson but they are magnificent in the flesh a lot larger than I was expecting, it has many air bubble within the glass which add to the effect. The textured bottle is amethyst and lime green.

I have attached a picture of the Exbor animals and an Exbor vase with a wonderful effect, like oil on water. I do like the Fish but are getting hard to find.

Will get a picture of the early Isle of Wight soon.

Regards

James

well to give you an idea Rosie, if you look on this image and you will see a green glass beaker with a lace effect enamel on.  Well I bought this off ebay last week for £5 yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and it's Salviati too.  The teaset I have is exactly the same enamelling work but different on each duo and in a stunning Royal Blue (are you dribbling yet) :24:

I managed to find out, purely by accident whilst looking for something else (as you do) that the piece at the front on the left hand side of the blue basket with the uranium fish is Salviati too ;D.  There is a lovely powder bowl I acquired recently from my local auction that I need help with, think it's Bohemian but not sure, will have to post separately

Hi Dinklepip,
I'm wondering where you found the Salviati attribution for the piece with the uranium fish? As far as I'm aware it's a Walsh Walsh form. The shape is shown in an 1883 Pottery Gazette advert, reprinted in Morris, B. (1978). Victorian Table Glass and Ornaments.

Simply resize the resized pictures again until they fall just below the 125Kb limit.  My photos typically start at 4300Kb  I CROP off stuff that is irrelevant leaving a border around the item, and save the result with a different name.  I then resize so that the maximum dimension is below 1000 and save the result and check the size now( this is because I wish to be able to post it a a later stage to http://www.glassphotographs.com/ an associated site which has size limits of 200Kb and a maximum dimension <1000).  If the result is not smaller than 200Kb I keep resizing and saving(this time under the same name) until it falls just below 200Kb in size, at which point I save it again as "GMB xxxxxxxxxxx" so I know I can post it successfully when I am finished.  Finally I shrink this new file to a size just below 125Kb using as many resizings and saves as necessary - and now I can post it as large as possible.  Some people use 3rd party sites or even their own site to post images.

Hope that is of use Pinky.

Ross

PS.  You can resize to make photos larger (eg. 400% will make the object 16 times bigger) BUT the image often is very poor.

I start with a high res photo and generally find that simply resizing once so that the longest dimension is 700 pixels works fine. I try not to have too much extraneous picture but crop if necessary. Don't forget to "save as" rather than save, so you retain your original. Simples. One or two steps.

Ah Sue, an 'as you like it moment' is the purchase of a Will Shakespear piece of glass.....I had a quick look at his site after seeing 'M's' display....  but then I went and drooled over Aron's stuff....love those silver bark bottles of his.

I can see my birthday choice is going to be a problem....  cause I also want another piece of Bev Jacks,,,  so difficult to make a single choice

As for shrewish - that's not my bag, I believe in plenty of  n' hugs.  Anyway I'm the wrong build to be shrewish, more like a Merry Wife of Cumbria!!  :hi:

You're just going to have to get yourself some extra birthdays.  :smg:
Do you have sprogs? If so, I reckon you should get their birthdays - you're the one that birthed. They didn't do anything.

(I don't get birthday pressies - I get unbirthday pressies instead. They're a bit random, sometimes two or so years inbetween, but when I do get one, it's usually a stonker! )

I did try shrewish for a year, a good while back - I couldn't help it, my hormones went all wonky, (old wumman thing) I turned into my mother,  :grrr:   scared my whole family witless, including myself.  :wsh:

Thankfully that is all over now. It was not fun. It's really, really unpleasant being unpleasant.

each time someone else adds to this, I groan........so what do I do, but add some more.        Cut glass does seem to get a bad press, so just to try and even up the odds, here is some which I hope will change people's thoughts on cut glass.
Picture one is Edinburgh & Leith (both marked for early 1930's probably), and I suspect the 'sweet/desert' might be 'brilliant cut' - the mitres are deep and the cutting is over the entire bowl.          Second picture is Stuart  -  with the vase being the oldest at something like late 1920's and the 'Woodchester' much more recent.   The vase has elements of a design called 'Villiers' (tulip buds on stem thingies), but I really don't know if it is that  -  could just be my wishful thinking.
Third picture is Royal Brierley, with the tumbler (highball) and vase in 'Honeysuckle' design - which is, apparently still in production (the tumble that is  -  I don't see the vase on their web site).
Lastly, a mixture of bits and bobs including a plate with the 'Tudor' backstamp - the two tall wines are Dartington, and a small sherry thingy is backstamped 'Waterford.   Whose the rest are is anyone guess.   So let's hope this will get more people collecting cut glass.

Keith - I know the plate is Tudor only because it has an acid back stamp  -  without that I'd be none the wiser.     Some of these back stamps can be very feint and difficult to see  -  what makes you think yours might be Tudor? :)
Anik - all these pieces are in a cabinet with a lot of glass doors and sides  - not perhaps ideal, but it does allow you to see most of the glass quite clearly.   But it isn't easy to show clear glass in a way that allows it's attractiveness to be seen to full effect.   Maybe some sort of lighting might improve the situation  -  what do you think?
I discovered yesterday whilst looking on the RB web site, that the highball tumbler has a price of £40, apparently :o  - so with that in mind I'd hate to guess what the vase might cost to replace (both of these pieces came from boot sales).

shame Keith, seems a bit stingy of them not to try and look for you.          Trouble is Anik, I don't really do displays anymore  -  I have this alternative method, it's called simply 'pack everything in as tight as you can get, because there's so much glass'.     Then of course it doesn't look good, and you can't see what's in the cabinets anyway.   Then there's all the bits packed away in cardboard boxes...........ahhhh ::).        But I bet you say that to all the boys anyway ;)

Ah, Anik, how can I refuse such a flattering request?

My theme of the month June 2011 is 'Better late than never', and it's a collection of German glass that I know or suspect (I don't know all the design dates) is more recent than I normally collect, but bought despite that. Most of it is Nachtmann and Peill. The latest one is definitely the Slice vase at the right of the left part of the display, it's a 2007 design. The giraffe and the dolphin vase are both Nachtmann, and I know they were in production around 2000, so they must be designed in the 90s or perhaps even 80s. I'm not sure about the two cylindrical lens vases, they could be older, 70s perhaps. The etched/transfer printed Peill vases with flowers I think are 80s-90s.

Next month I'll have to come up with a colourful theme again, or my husband will start to complain. But he really likes the big Peill vase, second from the left of the right side part of the display, so that should keep him quiet for a month :).

The 'slice' vase and the giraffe vase are my favourites.  :)

Why don't I have window sills.   :-\  Glass looks so great with the back light.

I just have my glass stored on top of my kitchen cabinets.  :-\
On the other hand most of it is local so you most of you may not even recognize many.  :-\

I think James and PX have shown again just how dramatic a 'single style' in different colour ways can be.  I still have the image of those satin Moretti long neck vases prodding me to start a dedicated search>>>>  :o but with umpteen boxes of glass stashed away in the loft I'm resisting temptation.

Love all the colours Craig  :hiclp:  the uranium Murano pieces look fantastic and you just have an amazing collection of beautiful glass.
Jim I love those Whitefriars vases all together as well - very impactful.

I find it difficult to find shelves I like to display groups of pieces en masse.  I love the vertical shelves we have - but they aren't condusive to having lots of pieces together and OH is getting more than a little miffed that I haven't sorted out the stuff mostly lying round our dining room at the mo whilst I decide how to rearrange things.
This first pic is mostly Bohemian/Czechoslovakian with  a few interlopers upstairs in our house.
The second is a table in our hall with some Czech pressed pieces.

m, what a beautiful, clean and uncluttered look!  I love how your glass is displayed on your vertical shelves -- each piece, with a little 'personal space' can be easily appreciated.  It's easy on the eye.  LOVELY!

Things here have got a little out of hand... my once happy little clusters of glass have become clutters of glass because of lack of space.  It looks a mess which makes me terribly unhappy.  I won't even mention what my unappreciative-of-glass husband thinks of it all...  :spls:

Thanks M, I really like your Bohemian group in the vertical shelves.... I also like your art..... I recognize many of the pieces of glass......  I was just commenting to Peggy today as we went through a couple of antique malls in Portland Oregon how I see glass that 2 years ago I would have just thought Czech and unknown, and now I know it to be Welz.... I was lucky  today and bought a really nice piece of Rindskopf in a twisted rib decor...... for not a lot of money.....  Oddly it was the nicest piece of Czech glass in a large case of glass and was priced much lower than all of the other pieces......  and I bought an interesting little striped piece.....  not sure of origin..... very well done though..... The tall piece is just over 10 inches and the striped piece is about 4.5 inches tall.....

We are actually in Eugene Oregon right now as I won a pair of tickets to the Antiques Roadshow and we go tomorrow with 3 different types of art and a carved wood skull  "box" with an ivory snake crawling in and out of it..... One of the few things I own that I really know nothing about.... but it is very odd and unique....... The art is an oil painting and a pair of etchings Peggy bought at an estate sale many years ago that are very unique and very good and we have never been able to identify them.

I am also taking in a portfolio of images I bought years back that are from Morave, published in 1902, and it contains images by several different artists, including 2 Mucha images I have not seen anywhere else....... It still has the original cover that holds the images.   I have tried to research it through the years and the only two links to the portfolio I ever found were one of the Mucha prints for sale, with a description saying that only 35 or so of the portfolios were ever produced, and another example of the Portfolio for sale by a print seller in Europe for several thousand pounds...... and we know how that goes at times....  ::)  One of the Mucha pieces is a little different, as it has an Egyptian Revival Motif to it, unlike any other Mucha piece I am familiar with.....  so we will see if they can tell us anything about our art..... Regardless of outcome I am sure we will have a blast......

Craig, that's all very exciting!  I hope you get the answers you are looking for, and as an added bonus, I sincerely hope you discover that you've got something 'big'. The portfolio sounds particularly interesting.  Please let us know how the Roadshow went.
 :hi:

P.S.  It is a great feeling to be able to recognize a piece of glass -- one year ago, I was oblivious to makers, designers, etc.  Now, I can walk around the market and spot a Czech piece from a distance.  Of course, I still make plenty of mistakes and sometimes get very confused, but... I'm more clever about glass now than when I first started.  And I trust I'll be even more clever in a year.  ;D

Graig, your "striped piece" is a bulb vase, made in England around 1885.
It was probably made by Richardson, I have copies of the original drawings here that look very very similar.
Lucky you!

Yes, steph, a single design in different colourways or - a single colour in different designs. Thanks, m. For me it is always also of the overall decorative picture, how they all look together. I may buy a piece for it fits the others I have for colour. Or i may choose not to buy something just because it simply doesn't.

(http://i343.photobucket.com/albums/o470/pxxu/th_IMG_1058.jpg) (http://s343.photobucket.com/albums/o470/pxxu/IMG_1058.jpg)

Huh, I may buy three of the same, just because the piece is so odd standing alone.  :)

Craig - rearranging always makes a refreshed feeling and reminds you of how wonderful pieces you have, doesn't it!

m - your vertical shelves are really nice! In a way they make a decorative effect as a whole, and on the other hand if you look closer you really see each piece individually.

thanks  for the lovely comments  :sun:
Anik, I find I am having to sell quite a bit of my glass and ceramics now - I just can't stand the clutter of too many pieces and I hate having to store them away.  So I've got my head round selling quite a bit and using the money to just buy a few pieces now and again that I really want for display.
I also find I get bored with some of my glass and I'm now constantly on the look out for pieces that are really unusual or that I haven't seen before.  The only mass produced pieces I don't get bored with, despite knowing they are not that unusual, is my Sklo Union glass.  They always look fab together as a display and the geometric designs mixed with the colours really appeal to me.

PX, I can totally understand why you would need to buy three pieces the same  :hiclp:  They look fabulous and you have some very unusual pieces. I love the green/clear ice type bowl - is it Humppila?

Craig, thanks - I love our art, but I'm finding the space to hang it is difficult  :spls:  Some is work that we have bought specifically over the years, but many of our pictures  I've bought at car boots for literally pennies.  I just can't resist if I see something I love (not quite as bad as my glass addiction thankfully as it takes up much more space).
Your two new vases are beautiful and a possible Richardsons piece - wow I'm jealous.  That's very exciting that you have some tickets to the Antiques Roadshow   I hope you are successful in your quest for info with your pictures.  I think the piece you are describing is the  skull tobacco jar mentioned earlier in this thread isn't it?  Do let us know what you find out - I love that piece.

Patricia.....  Thanks for the possible ID....  It has an unusual flaw in the glass near the rim in one place that almost looks like an internal stress fracture, except when you look at it with a loop. I can display it with the flaw to the back. I just liked the shape and colors and thought it was interesting..... and it was cheap at $18. It is not like anything I have, and if I am not anything else, I am eclectic in my tastes for glass   So I am assuming it was a good find.....

M, I will post the results here.....  I am really interested in finding out.....  As far as art goes, My attic has racks I built to stand up framed art, and frames waiting for art, because we have so much of it sitting around....  that does not count the boxes with unframed pieces that do not fit the empty pie crust frames......  I guess my collecting addiction is not limited to just glass......

px.... I totally understand shapes and colors. Eddy Scheepers, who is the webmaster for Loetz.com and also a member of the research group for our new website only collects green Loetz pieces in unique and unusual shapes.....

I love seeing everyone's stuff on here... the collections are as interesting and as varied as the personalities......  Every time I look through this thread it puts a smile on my face.....

Racks sounds like a good idea!  Ours are mostly stashed in a huge old travelling trunk - I keep meaning to sell some of them ... of course ;D
Sue, yes I have 5 Ed cones that came from a huge display chandelier (was 6 but one got broken when they were posted to me  ).  I'm currently selling as much as I can in order to fund an enormous copper wire structure 'y' thingy that I want to have made, so I can hang them up the staircase.  But that means posting them back up to Scotland and finding the dosh for it, so for the moment they are displayed upside down whilst they wait  ::)

I take it you're having the chandelier "restored" by Ed and Tom themselves? Brilliant - it will be "as new" rather than a restoration job as such. When I got Ed to make my cones, they were £92 each  - with the supports - he's not expensive at all - and it's great to be supporting living artists - but go and meet him in person if you possibly can - he's lovely and fascinating!

No,sadly not having the chandelier restored - I only bought the cones.  But I want to ask them to make a completely new wire structure that graduates upwards, so I can hang it up the stairs wall with the cones in.....well... that's the plan anyway.  Just need to acquire the funds to do so  ;D

Basically, it will still make no difference - it will be Ed cones and Tom wires and a completely unique chandelier by the Igleharts. Wonderful  :smg: - I take it you will be using it - actually lighting the oil lamps?

(I have to confess to being utterly shocked to find out that Paul Daniels has an Ed and Tom Iglehart chandelier. Assuaged slightly by the discovery that PD pays somebody else to have good taste for his home decor!  :24: )

The Antiques Roadshow results are in and I will be returning to work on Monday as I am not a new millionaire....  I am barely a multi-hundredaire!!!  Our art was interesting, but not worth a ton of money and the skull jar turns out to be Japanese and made for the export market.... carved bone snake, and a very interesting piece from the early 20th century.... and not worth a ton of money......  but I love it anyway......  Interesting stuff, and we met some wonderful people....  Peggy had her picture taken with Mark Wahlberg, the host of the show.... It was great fun, and I would do it again and again, just to meet the people.......

Got some great new pieces, and the glass buys alone were worth the trip.

We are having a wonderful time and it is my first real time to do anything since I took the dive off of the loading dock last August.

Sounds as though you are both having a fabulous time....and it's a good job you buy things you love rather than because they may make you some money  :sun:  that way, whilst it is good to find out some provenance, you can still enjoy them just because.
The skull jar may not be worth a fortune, but it has been made with real and enviable skill and with heart.  That's why it is the most gorgeous piece of art.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.

......
Yes, m, the bowl is Tauno Wirkkala for Humppila and of a much more rare colour. The usual brown/clear is something that was a little "too popular" by the time, 70s,  and they are all around available now. Nobody wants them, rather not even to see them!  ;D
But maybe just for that reason, I like this one. And it is signed too. Actually quite fabulous.

It is changeover time again.  From Kosta Boda to Thomas Webb.

Top Shelf:   Mainly Webb Coronation c.1934 in amber but including the black based beaker - the other pattern I have seen.  I believe the blue comport is also Webb but can't confirm that.

Middle Shelf:  Coronation Pattern Water set Plus a delightfil Dark Green decanter and a clear Bullseye bowl

Bottom Shelf:  Large Amber Bullseye Bowl, a supersize decanter with engraved yachts on the front panel, Normal Webb Decanter and a Richardson Decanter(One of my favourites) - Richardsons were taken over by Thomas Webb.

great glasses Ross - wouldn't mind some of those :).......so thought I'd show some of my own Webb's, although hope Anik isn't around because she will complain that this really isn't a proper display (and she's right)  -  but it's probably the only way I get to see some of my own glass (otherwise it's mostly packed away).   Amazing to find a full set of six of the small Amber Bull's Eye desserts, but the real gems are the two wheel engraved conical glass in Sunshine Amber.    And I'd like some more blue please.   The Amber Bull's Eye bowls do seem to come in more shapes and sizes than you can shake a stick at, and must be the most common item to find wherever you are.

I had a matt black moment this month, but it didn't last long as I couldn't get the balance right for the eye.

Christine,
I do like matt black but, when I mix it amongst the other colours of glass it lifts a display, highlighting the translucency and light reflect properties of the other colours. I think I need to find a nice tall piece.....
All the matt black pieces I have have been purchased locally in NZ, currently my little corner looks like this but I think next month I'll go for more colour.

Meegs I love your black pieces - I can't remember who said it or where I read it (it may have been Christian Lacroix thinking about it....when someone had done an article on his amazing apartment, I remember the bathroom in particular being all lime green and yellow and pink with a little black)  that every room should have a 'touch' of black. I think the same applies to glass displays - black looks best used sparingly, as it illuminates the actual piece and boosts all the other colourful pieces around it.

lovely mix, I once read some place that there is no 'true' black glass, but that it's usually intense amethyst or blue. But your pieces look good and black, Iv'e got the odd shoe, milk jug and sugar bowl, I think there Joblin, certainly victorian or early last century anyway and they seem very black....just wondering what the truth of blackness is, will go and google it when I have time!

Of course, purple is the new black you know!! :sun:

Lovely displays all of them, and I really liked the all black display as well as the black/white one Meegs.
The nice thing for me is seeing so many pieces of 'glassware' because I only have a relatively small collection, everything else is devoted to glass animals.
I tend to leave all your pictures open on the computer, so that when John goes past, I can casually say 'See, you thought I was bonkers....look at this lot!! I only have a fraction of the amount this person has!'
So far there has been no printable reply,  but he is very good about it all! :)

This must be one of the longest running threads on the GMB....anyone know for certain??

Thanks for the nice comments all.  "Flying free" I can assure you the goblets are used regularly for special toasts of Champers.  You only get four full glasses from a bottle - but they sit in the hand superbly.  Actually I started collecting the Coronation pattern with four of them picked up at an auction in Brisbane, Australia(1700kms from home) just in time to toast my Aunt's 90th birthday in 1998.  Cost me the princely sum of $44.00 all up that is $11(Au) = 7 pounds each.  I kneew they cost nearer $90.00 each in Melbourne - was I rapt.

oohhh Keith,
I like that black/purple vase it looks like it has the height I need for my display.
Rosieposie,
I try very hard - not always successfully - to keep the glass under control. I love to be surrounded with "my treasures" so I can see them around me and handle them. I do not see the point in keeping things in boxes. However not every member of the household has such a high tolerance of glass cluttering up every available space. So to keep the peace I do have things in boxes. When I change the display and go poking around in those boxes the thrill is almost like finding a new piece! Yes, one daughter refers to me as "crazy glass lady", I just remind her she carries my genes..........
Steph,
your right, some pieces you hold up to the light and you can see the amethyst/blue(plinths in particular) but all the pieces I had in the display seem so dense and very black if it were not for their weight, detail, feel, design and small chip on one piece I could have easily passed them over as ceramic.
M,
I agree with the touch of black, very art deco, sometimes it is just a black plinth under a bowl that makes a display.

Thanks for all your positivity!

One of my daughters-in-law feels the same.  But her daughter (age 6) loves my glass!  I have given her two of my (Chinese) paperweights to 'start her off', and now every time she comes to visit she gazes wistfully at my collection and says, "I really, really like that one!"  ;)  :D   I tell her, "OK, you can have it one day" and my d-i-l glares!   ;D  Oh, it's in the genes allright!   :24:   :smg:

Leni, there lovely I'd probably stand there and stare at your paperweights and act the same as your Granddaughter.
The funny thing is she is the Daughter that trawls the auction web pages and adds pieces she thinks I might like to the watch-lists and points lovely pieces out to me saying "I really shouldn't show you this".
Probably just a fickle teenage thing....

I recently switched my glass/music retreat to a different room (more light, more space), and so decided I'd like to be surrounded by the glass that wasn't already in my display cases.  There's some logic to the arrangement, but not much. Here are two of the walls.

  well you have a stunning collection and they look beautiful on display like that....how have you fixed the shelves to the wall though?  Are they 'floating' shelves.  We struggle with those here as we have lathe and plaster walls and they don't support shelf weight.

They're cheap floating shelves from Ikea. The walls here are mainly 2 X 4 studs with drywall. I had to abandon the long shelves as you really need to screw them into the studs and the frames for the long ones don't let you do that.  I've got to redo a couple as I'd like them to be a little tighter.

But thanks for the compliments. I do like being in the room.

Wow!  What a stunning display.  There is so much to look at.  I note you are a keen Danish collector - lots of Per Lutken - as am I.  I would like you to photograph "chunmks" of each wall so we could see the individual pieces in more detail - I am sure it would be fascinating.  Don't think I dislike the overall effect it is wonderful.  Well done.   :hiclp: :hiclp: :hiclp:

I had a few other thoughts for my July theme, but when I read last night on the Czech forum that Mr. Frantisek Vizner died last week on July 1, there was no doubt that the best way to honour him was to take out a few of my Vizner pieces. As I don't have enough Vizner pieces yet to fill an entirely window sill, I surrounded his pieces by those of his contemporaries and colleagues, Jan Schmid, Jiri Brabec, Vladislav Urban, Rudolf Jurnikl and Frantisek Peceny.

Blue and clear were chosen to reflect peace and tranquility. Mr. Vizner, may you rest in peace and may your beautifully designed pieces of glass help to keep you alive in the memory of your family, friends, colleagues and collectors for a long time to come.

The pinky tinged Viking (makes him look less macho now he's sun purpled!) is Pukeberg, Steph. He should be clear of course. He's not my biggest Viking though, the big fella won't fit on those shelves! He's 7½" tall and gorgeous! http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5889.0.html - see reply #9

Edited to add.... I've just realised the big fella is on the top shelf, so you might have meant him after all! :) He's Holmegaard and incredibly  handsome!  :sun:

Hi Keith
Lovely display and I've just spent too much time having a nosey at this thread - how interesting and great for me as a newbie to the world of glass collecting. My beady eye just noticed that you had a blue bubble candle holder (is it?) on the second shelf down at the left (as you look at it in the pic) next to the frill top pink vase. I just picked one of these up at a car boot and wondered if you could confirm my Whitefriars suspicions?
Thanks for your help from a very grateful newcomer

Hello All,  Not a new display in the house that will stay, but a temporary positioning of the new haul from the Antique show we went to last weekend.... An annual trek to Portland from Seattle......  where we usually come away with some good finds....  This year was reasonably good to us....  Some Bohemian including Welz, Kralik and a great Rindskopf Hyacinth, some nice Italian, a great silver on-lay piece and a very nice piece of Chalet from Canada......  and the best part is that they were all cheap.....

The last couple of months have been quite good to me as far as glass hunting goes.....   :chky:  :chky:

David, I would have likely thought Murano on the Chalet piece, except for the acid stamp on the underside...... It is my first piece of Chalet.

Christine..... The piece you would likely want is the Chalet piece.... it glows like a traffic light under blacklight...... It is actually much nicer than the pic shows....  I'll take a pic of it and post it when I have a chance......  The colors in sunlight are quite amazing......

The flower piece is Kralik......

M, I think the pink with gold piece is Barbini, but I am not sure....  a gorgeous piece....  quite striking....

I am, to say the least, quite happy  with the trip......

I like it Craig.   Who made the tall vase (rear left)?   Is the green with cintrolled bubbles a Galliano Ferro?

Hi Ross, the tall piece is by an American Studio Glass company in Oregon by the name of The Glass Forge..... We have a couple of pieces by them.....

The front right piece is a Galliano Ferro piece.... in Cobalt and Uranium.....  One of my favorite Italian pieces....

Hi Rex, I found a way of reducing the size so I could post them here.  From picasa I email them to myself, then when you open the email click on 'save as'. and put them in 'My documents'  That automatically reduces them, then you can just upload to this site....a bit of a roundabout way, but it works for me.

Hi Rex

Have you tried to resize your photos using the PAINT program?

What I usually do is, after loading the photos to my computer (which will usually be stored in My Document folder), I'll then go and click on the PAINT icon (you can find this icon under your accessories file...the one which looks like a few paint brushes in a container) and resize the photos from 100% to 45%.

Hope this helps

Would love to see photos of your collection.....cos I collect the same sort of things like you do :)

Cheers
Brenton

Yep, I'll vouch for Brenton's method of resizing!
Although I have other options and programs available it is much quicker to re size with windows.
Like Brenton I save a copy of my photo to my documents. Then open the copy in my documents by right clicking it and selecting "open with" and choosing paint.  In paint you then select "image" and  then "stretch/skew" and making the same adjustment percentage in vertical and horizontal as this is only a copy of the original image I don't even bother to rename it when I save it. After a few you get pretty good at seeing the image size and estimating the percentage you need to adjust to to get it to 125 KB!
Then it is simple to post here by using the browse/attach button here where your posting by accessing your my docs file and viola open the image!
I have used several versions of windows and so far they are all very similar.
Cheers

Andy, if you mean the one of the left I don't know who made it but it was bought new for me last year (I suspect Chinese modern.) The others are Caithness (centre three) and Peter Tysoe (right.)  The thin twisty stopper at the centre back doesn't belong to the Caithness one (which is a vase not a perfume) it belongs to one of those thin glass Egyptian perfumes that Boots were selling 15-20 years ago - the rest of the bottle is hiding behind the vase.

Here is some pictures of my little collection. It is growing week by week. I have only been at this for a year or so but think I have done quite well. My favourite pieces are Strömbergshyttan but sometimes I cant resist other pieces too. Have to be very careful though what I start to collect since I tend to go overboard. :)

Wow -- great collection! And beautifully displayed!

Incredible what an amount of fabulous pieces can be found within a year if you are in the right country :)

If I would collect Strömbergshyttan, my collection would consist of a single piece (and that would have cost a fortune here).

Thanks, the windows are great for arranging glass, its an old building that I live in. During the winter they are full of crystal, but in the summer I like to have my windows wide open 24-7 to let in the light and fresh air !

The diamond shapes are by Asta Strömberg.

I usually keep them on my glass table top.

Steph, visit Sweden on your next holiday. Spend a weekend at the Kosta Boda Art Hotel which is an experience. So many wonderful pieces of art displayed in the hotel and much is for sale (if you have a very thick wallet)

It has to be a lot of antique dealers down there too I guess with all the tourists passing through our swedish glass makers.

You were lucky to get that duck Ross!  I had my eye on it and only decided not to bid at the last minute!! So, Lucky you!!
I did have quite a lot of Glory Art Glass, including a lovely pink duck,  but I sold them all to buy Leerdam pieces.
The 'pigeons' are Selkirk Ducks, all signed and labelled....I have so many I can only display a few at a time, and some of them have come 'home' from Oz!! They are the Chris Dodds design, and I love his work.
Was it you Ross that said you had one of his cats on their desk?  I wish I could remember who it was....I have more of his cats and loads of his squirrels and so many pieces of Selkirk I need a cupboard for them alone.....lots of them are packed up....so sad!
Here are the Chris Dodds squirrels with an eagle and a leopard, a beautiful Chris Dodds Golden owl, and th pink Glory Art Glass IOW duck I sold. Buyers remorse springs to mind!!

I don't have a spare one in this colour unfortunately. I have green, amber and the porcelain one so far and I also heard that amethyst colour also exist, but have never seen one example before.

Nemmie.....am still looking for the float bowl :(

What a lot of useful advice and information about resizing...I will try some and see if I can do it too.....my way is a bit tedious!
Thought you might like to see my fox collection whilst I am here (but Rosie, you NEVER log off!!). The newest one is an M. Janku one, signed with a label as well, and is neodymium glass.  :)
Oh and who was it said they liked Chris Dodds and had one of his cats on their desk???  Well here are some of his pussy cats in the sunshine.  :sun:

Very nice, Rosie! Lovely!

I usually don't have items from my Marcolin collection displayed in my window. They are instead safely on display in my Billy bookcases (with glass doors) from IKEA.

Instead I have these (not Marcolin items) on display in my window!  :rah:

They are absolutely glorious, Rosie - and groupled together like that -  it's like seeing a moment of a ballet, frozen in time - (well frozen for the photo - I imagine in 3-D reality it's more like the dance is ongoing....)
You need more. You really do. They look so fabulous together.... more is more, Rosie. >:D

It looks beautiful. I have not seen this one before, but it resembles the big round i have in one of my pictures. Mine has bubbles in it though.....
I have yet to find some litterature about Strömbergshyttan so I can find out the years and makers of the different pieces I pick up.

Wow Mikael, your collection is stunning, and so well focused too... If you find a good Strombergshyttan source, please share it on the forum, I have recently bought this Strombergshyttan that I absolutely adore (more beautiful than my meagre photographing skills can ever show) and knowing who designed it would be very satisfying...

I need to think up a good theme for my August display to have this particular vase in it.

I'll tell John you said I should have more Sue!!

Those Strombershyttan pieces are so sophisticated Mikael.....if I had a win on the lottery, I would buy lots of it, and your vase is beautiful Astrid, it looks as though there have been explosions in the glass. I want it all!!! :24:
( I have used this pic to depict me lying on my back kicking and screaming like a spoiled brat.....it is not me laughing!!)

Oh Ingela,  they really are very very beautiful.....and I love the way you have grouped them so tastefully....especially the cold winter theme with the tree....I have a clear one like that....it was sold as a ring holder.....when I got it , it had 'the' label.....I just love them....I would like to have a whole forest of them!!  I use mine at Christmas with all the little spun glass and art glass Angels I have.....I think I posted a picture earlier in this thread.

Hasn't this been the most wonderful thread ever on the GMB.....is it the longest with the most pictures??  Have we set a record?

Thanks ...... I love the thrill of finding uranium glass .... Theres a uv light in there and it looks fab at night ..... Most of the pieces come from car boots and charity shops, but I pushed the boat out with the 2 clocks which came from a junk shop for a whopping £5 each  :chky: ....... Glad to have found this site ... its great  :hiclp:

My august 2011 display... Fiinally a real splash of colour to make the hubby happy. I've chosen a theme of coloured-and-structured-on-the-outside vases, and because I had a specific Czech pressed glass in July, I stayed away from those. In all cases, the structure of the pieces can be felt on the outside.

If you have a clue about the unknowns in the display, info is always welcome! Most of them (but not all) have featured in a thread already somewhere

First picture (left side), from left to right:
1. Unknown. At one time I thought it was Gral-glas, but couldn't confirm it when the book came out. Aseda has been suggested as well.
2. Sweden, Kumela, Kai Blomqvist
3. Czechoslovakia, ZBS, Vaclav Horacek
4. Germany, Gral-Glas (attr to Gral-glas atelier)
5. Germany (I suspect), unknown. Colour and shape are very Germany-1950s (perhaps by or influenced by Wagenfeld)
6. Germany, Peill & Putzler

Second picture (right side), from left to right:
6. (the blue one) Germany, Gral-Glas, Günther Hoffman
7. Germany, Ingrid Glas, Kurt Wokan
8. Germany, Hirschberg
9. The Netherlands, Leerdam, Wim Heesen
10. Germany, Ingrid Glas
11. Germany, Hirschberg
12. Unknown, but there are many similarities to nr. 11 to the feel, thickness and structure of the glass, so I'm inclined to put it down as a Hirschberg as well.

Astrid

P.S. Once again, lovely pieces, Astrid.

David, a perfectly subtle display...  super. ;D   But what is the middle piece, please?  I don't recognise it.

By the way, I do like colourful displays, especially when the pieces are tied by a theme -- I just can't handle my own colourful displays.  I don't know what goes well with what, and then come to the conclusion that colour is chaotic and disturbing.   :-X

But I appreciate the great majority of the displays in this thread, even when I don't comment.   :hi:

David they look truly handsome!  love the middle piece.
Anik,  by contrast I long to have a sophisticated and subtle clear/pale glass display, yet I cannot seem to have any that don't have a riot of colour, the more the better.  I have to have an amber or yellow, red or deep pink, amethyst, blue and green in all my collections  ;D otherwise to my eye, something is lacking and it looks wrong.  I have a display of glass and ceramics on one table at the moment, that is all amber/ochre and clear or white and it just doesn't 'do' it for me so will shortly be changed.  It's one of the reasons I think I love Welz glass so much, because of the combinations of colour in each piece. Mind you it's the same with my house.  I 'think' in my head I want an all white serene space and then as soon as I get it I need to add brightly coloured silk cushions.

You see m, that's the beauty of this thread -- the diversity of the displays (and glass) is wonderful!

David, thank you for the extra information about your middle piece.   I'll look it up when I get back home in a few days.  But why haven't you added it to Michael's "My Skrdlovice...." thread with some extra pictures?  Cough, cough, nudge, wink...
