Title: Scottish paperweight? unknown manufacturer
Post by: cfosterk on February 11, 2008, 05:26:43 PM
Bought at Newark on Friday....

Any idea's? At first I thought some sort of Strathearn experimental/abstract but now I'm not too sure. Nothing like it on Richards site...

Ysart Harlequin? Double Harlequin maybe?

There is some similarity to a Strathearn "Aurora" - though the colouring is unusual, and Aurora usually has more bubbles.
What's the size of your weight?

That was my thinking - aurora-esque. Dimensions are 2.75 in diameter, 2.25 in high.

Wear to base shows some age and it 'feels' 1960's/1970's.

My other thought was a variation on an alladins cave - athough it's very different to the perthshire examples i own (in four different colourways). This piece is predominantly pink/purple in hue.

Fairly sure its not a ysart harlequin derivative - at £4.00 that really would have been a steal!!

Another feature is that the design fills most of the dome again rather in the style of aurora and sea urchin. Base is highly polished, completely flat.

Base is highly polished, completely flat.
Which (at least my) Aurora is not - it's fire polished, which seems to be standard for Strathearn. Could it have been damaged, ground and polished?

Not sure the base finish is a good guide as Strathearn used fire-polished, and highly (flat) polished bases in equal quantities. I think all the aurora's i've seen (only got a blue at the mo) have had fire polished pontils. However, urchin (blue and orange), ice pool, stoer, tropic, orchid etc etc all have highly polished bases.

It's certainly not a typical aurora set up - you expect evenly placed rows of bubbles and this isn't the case. Looks to be two sets of three spaces bubbles only. Will just have to label "unknown, possibly scottish" (again)

Whilst on the subject of Strathearn - one of my Ice pools bears a triangular Design Centre London label rather than the normal Strathearn label.

I don't think there has been damage by the way as the finish on the base looks fine. I'm sure I've seen something like this weight before - driving me crazy!!!

A little late but this looks like the work of Avondale in Pembrokeshire.

I saw one like this that ended a few days ago on ebay and I did lots of research but could never find a photo like it anywhere in my books.
I remember seeing one many years ago but cannot bring back its maker.  But it does look like a Strathearn reference I have just looked up online.
        Regards Roger.

Only superficially, the Strathearn design has way more bubbles whereas this one is typical of Avondale, they make this layout in a variety of colours.

There is a series of photographs of one of these weights here (on an orange fabric background), the images are from an old ebay auction and may not last: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=avondale+paperweight+glass&client=firefox-b&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjDpbKQsP3OAhUEIMAKHbJ5AWwQ_AUICSgC&biw=1366&bih=634#imgrc=_

Yes, Avondale may well be correct. But also yes, the main images from the eBay entry have disappeared so the detail cannot be checked. And searching online for a similar paperweight is not very fruitful - there are loads of animals etc. described as paperweights but nothing obvious for paperweights such as the one in this thread.

I suggest an email to Avondale Glass.

It just occurred to me that there may be some images lurking on my machine, frustratingly I did not keep an 'overhead' view of this weight so these images are not conclusive, however the weight in these photos has the same bubble layout as the OP's.

I have two of these - a green one, and a purple one...and I do not know who made them. But they came from Scotland, with some Strathearn and Vasart pieces...so I suspect that they are Scottish.
