Title: Superb Art Vase distinctive signature, Czech Harrachov Harrtil range 1958
Post by: Andy on June 15, 2011, 04:25:02 PM
Hi all,
just picked up this lovely vase from an auction. A very distinctive etched mark to the base, I dont recognise it, but im sure someone will. also 58, possibly a date. Beautiful condition, im thinking it may be Graal technique?
Any ideas welcome. 12cm tall.
Cheers
Andy

Michelle, I think youve got it ! Ive just added it to the header while i still can, but looks a very good match. I hadnt heard of Merletto before, just checked Ivos book,
" Italian term for a fishnet  pattern with a fine glass fibre netting"
I wonder if thats a Harrtil signature, i will do some digging.!

Excellent stuff  :hiclp:

this has a closer picture - possibly Harrtil merletto designed by Milan Metaelak?
the mark on the base may have been for a company perhaps a commission?

Definitely an example of Harrtil glass, so made at Harrachov. Designed would have been by either Milan Metelak, Milena Veliskova or Marie Stahlikova (late 1950s).
The Harrtil technique was developed by Milos Pulpite in the mid 1950s. Information gleaned from this board and Mark Hill's book Hi Sklo Lo Sklo (I just sold a Harrtil bowl so I have been checking up on it recently).

No idea about the mark but suspect it was commissioned for a company or special occasion or.....

John

Several crossed posts.... Merletto as I understand it usually has a more random arrangement of threads.

Thanks both
Ive just looked in Mark Hills book, I didnt suspect Czech for this one, its a pretty definite match. The 58 is probably right for the date.
Been quiet lately , id forgotten how efficient and clever the members on here are!  :hi: ( and quick)

Cheers
Andy

PS As you were so quick i was able to modify the header again!  :hiclp:

Hi Andy,
think it´s the logo of the 1958 Brussel Expo...   :)

An excellent example of the harrtil range and with an expo acid etch. I have not seen that before. Presumably it marketed and sold there at the time. I don't think you can easily improve on that Andy as an example of its kind! Good to see you back on GMb and finding the CZ glass still!

Hi Robert. I was quite surprised this one was Czech. I could tell it was a quality piece, and was curious about that strange mark on the base!
Cheers for now,
Andy
