Title: German pressed glass bowl - fishy pattern...
Post by: Anne on February 04, 2007, 07:56:00 PM
Does anyone recognise this bowl please? It's a small bowl (4½" across the top excluding the lugs) with lugs either side, on one of which it says MADE IN GERMANY with a pattern of fish and reeds etc... around it.  Five little bumps on the base act like tiny feet.  Colourless pressed glass.

Oooh, ooh, I am sure Ivo has one of these in pale margigold Carnival. It baffled us then and it probably will baffle us now.

(But I am wondering about Walther......)

Glen, finally I deciphered your smallest note: Walther seems to be possible at least - for ME it's a question of quality - in this case the quality and colour is inferior, which leads to VEB Sachsenglas perhaps 1960ies

Pamela - yes, I agree with you - VEB Sachsenglas is very likely.

Thank you both for your replies. :)

I'd been wondering about the date:  as it says Made in Germany I'd assumed that meant either pre-Berlin Wall going up, or post-Berlin Wall coming down (so before 1961 or after 1989). 1960's puts them bang in the period of the partition of Germany, doesn't it?

So would that mean Made in Germany means what was then West Germany? (as opposed to Made in DDR as on my green jug.)  Ivo's little book says that VEB were in the GDR - but I cannot remember if GDR means the same as DDR,  or if GDR means West Germany. Can someone please clarify for me? Many thanks. :)

right you are Anne  ;D
GDR is German Democratic Republic and therefore about 1949 to 1989 - Eastern Germany

before I continue - I have to read below please :P

Read.
Well as far as I do remember, production from West Germany was marked (if at all) 'Made in Western Germany'
Made in Germany thus could be East production also imho - Ivo?

In this context, BTW, did you know that Japan industry has built up a retort city and called that 'usa' during the Sixties? The whole production was exported 'made in usa'  ;D

Anne, anotherone in the context of origin: Inwald (Bohemia) and Walther (Saxonia) had not problem with producing their items with a highpressed 'BELGE' in the base

Hmmm thanks Pamela, I  think I'm even more confused now!  ;D  I just knew these bowls were going to be a problem as soon as I set eyes on them, but they are nice little fish and...  they're glass... and... I couldn't resist!  ::)  I think they just did it to confuse us all years later!  >:D

Didn't someone say not too long back, on the board, that there's a place called Murano in south America?  :o

I think "Made in Germany" replaced "made in the US zone"  some time after 1948 and was probably used up to 1960 - but I'm not willing to speculate on anything later.  I just don't know who where or when....

I went a-googling and found an interesting page on Wikipedia all about Made in Germany!  :o It's amazing what's on that site!  ;D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_Germany - seems to be saying that up to 1974 Made in Germany could mean either East or West, so that means VEB is back in the frame Pamela. ;)

Hi Anne,
I picked this little bowl up today, it's the mermaid version of your little bowl.
I looked at it and felt it belonged in a dolls house! :usd:

Hi Meegs, isn't that sweet! I wonder if they were both from the same set - like a series of designs making up a set - or if they were two different sets?  Maybe a full set will turn up somewhere so we'll know (or we might find it in a catalogue in due course!)

Thanks for adding your photos to the topic.

BTW what size is the mermaid one please?

Anne,
The little clear mermaid bowl is the same size as your little fishy one - 4 1/2" excluding lugs in diameter and 2" high.
The larger blue mermaid and a larger fish one I have are 8 1/2"in diameter and 3 1/4" high.
There is a lot more detail in the larger versions.
The dealer I purchased it from felt like you that they may have come in sets.
I have seen many of the larger ones but this was the first small one I have ever found!
Cheers
Meegs
