Title: Help with ID of this glass bowl please ~ WMF IKORA ?
Post by: johnfandmaryp on November 09, 2006, 03:17:01 PM
Just the one bowl which I'd like help with please!

It's about 10.5" diameter and 2.75" deep (26.5cm x 7cm). As you know, I'm only a beginner but, at the risk of embarrassing myself, the colours remind me of Murano and the decoration with the yellow 'splodges' look to me like Maltese, perhaps M'dina. Good and heavy, with a polished pontil.

Any help would be truly appreciated. Many thanks, John.

mmmmm I have quite a few pieces of Mdina and this doesn't look like anything of theirs I've seen before - the shape or the colouring isn't right IMHO. It's not splodgy or splashy enough and is a little too perfect in shape ... I'm not an expert either and am happy to be corrected but my hunch just from the photos would be that it's NOT Mdina.

Thanks for that Pip. The shape actually reminded me of a Whitefiars bowl, but I've been told it's definitely not WF ~ I didn't think it was because of the colours, but thought I'd try on the WF site.
I know what you mean about not splodgy enough for M'dina, but it's the closest I could think of!!
Will keep my fingers crossed that someone may be able come up with a suggestion.

I thought the same thing because of the colour combo, but it lacks the white netting which is so typical for Ikora - so if it is it is not a standard piece.

Hi Pamela & Ivo, and thanks for your thoughts. After seeing your earlier replies, I made a start trying to find any similar Ikora pieces to compare it with but without much luck.
I've just come back to my PC and found your last message Pamela ~ am I right in thinking that, from the link you posted, it is definitely Ikora? I can't see anything the same there, but it certainly has some similarity to #v32. Should there be a makers mark on it if it's Ikora? Or any other 'distinguishing features'?
Sorry if these are silly questions, but I'm intrigued!
Thanks again for your help, John.

Just to give you the full picture, I got it at auction very recently where it was in a lot with a very good Whitefriars red/blue/purple streaky tumbler vase from the 1930's (which has been confirmed on the WF web site). This could confirm my feelings that the bowl is good quality. The marks on the foot would suggest that it has some age, and it weighs just over 1.6kg ~ that's all I can tell you!
Cheers, John.
PS I'm going to change the topic subject to include Ikora, in case there are any more experts out there.

Thanks Ivo. I had already visited your site in my search for knowledge, but only read the 'Ikora' section ~ silly me!
Had another look, and the 'WMF art glass' paragraphs are particulalry helpful ~ thanks again, John.

Hi again,
I'm going to list this bowl on eBay and would like to include links to this discussion board, your site, Ivo and Jan Kilian's.
Would anybody mind if I do this?
Cheers, John.

You could be right about that Pamela, although I haven't had problems before! Just checked their policy, and they do allow one link to a page 'that further describes the item....', so could probably get away with linking to this board   :)  Unless anyone here objects?
Well, it's worth a go.
Cheers, John.

Will be listing it tomorrow evening, and will post the item number here if anyone's interested.
Thanks again for all your help, John.

John, post the eBay link into the Market Place forum - that's what it's for - and you may find it helps the sale along too. Good luck!  8)

Thans for that Anne ~ I hadn't got that far down the forum index yet, so hadn't noticed it! ~ will certainly do as you suggest.
Cheers, John.

To the best of my knowledge, I think it's OK to post links that will prove attribution and is relevant to the research, but they would definitely come down on advertisments or stores offering prodcts for sale.

I've often linked to various sites where information has been gained from, without a problem.

Thanks for that information Dave. I've done it myself before with no problem, but will be careful about the advertising thing. Cheers, John.
