Title: Dutch(?) 18th century - or is it
Post by: Antwerp1954 on February 26, 2014, 11:39:05 AM
Can anyone enlighten me on this glass? Bought in Holland and described as a dram glass it is 11.5 cm tall,. The bowl has the usiual tool marks and striations associated with hand blown glass. The metal, which has aslight greenish tinge, comtains small bubbles and inclusions some of which are quite brown and also  gives yellow luminescence under UV. It possessses a domed, folded foot with considerable wear and a rough pontil mark.

Where do you think it was made and when?

Hi ,
best I can offer is I have seen the form in larger wine sized glasses described as being made at Paderborn in Germany a little south and west of Lauenstein

hope you enjoyed viewing my little selection of glass at Cambridge , its always nice to put a face to a name .

cheers ,
             Peter.

Many thanks Peter. It was good to meet you and we particularly enjoyed looking at and being allowed to handle the wonderful glasses on display. But for my self-discipline I could have bankrupted us!

With regards to this glass, I am as certain as I can be that it is 18th century. Comparing the metal with other examples I reckon about 1760-70. If I make any progress in identifying it I'll return to the board with my findings.

Progress!

Peter - you were spot on. A contact at Dr Fischer Auctions, Germany reckons it is Weserbergland (Weser uplands) glass made at the Emde glassworks which was situated very near Bad Driburg (15-20 km east of Paderborn) in Westphalia.

In form and design the glass is so different from any other glass I have. I think the very, very, very, very faint green tinge which is barely noticeable is due to a minor impurity in the metal.
