Title: Gebruder Podbira

Do any of you with specialist knowledge of Art Deco Czech glass know whether Podbira glass was signed, or labelled, either paper or acid etched, or merely carries a Czechoslovakia acid etched mark to the base? Is there a musterbuch, or is this the reason so much seems to be attributed to, rather than conclusively by?

Post by: Frank on April 26, 2006, 07:44:41 PM: Probably covered in the Passau museum books, Das Böhmisches Glas 1750-1950. Set of 7 but I think Czech is covered in 2 volumes and you can buy individual volumes.

At least they get mentioned in these books... Rachmann Brothers, close neighbours and friends, seemed to mark nothing. I have seen a glass with a Sudetenland label that was supposed to be by Podbira Bros.

I guess the Sudetenland merely marks the period 1938-1945. Much seems to be attributed to Podbira, but is rarely referenced adequately.
Palda, could be another possibility but also hard to find definite ids for production.

Perhaps you should ask Jan Killian and also Elisabeth Michitsch who also seems to deal in this glass to comment. Also Eddy Scheepers & Rayne Haines - long shots but you never know.

I think, a liqueur set by Podbira, from tthe 1930's in gilded polka dot decor.

I just hope the perpetrators suffered equally when their time came ... I don't think I could even bear to own a piece of Podbira now I know how much they must have suffered :(

I understand how you see this, but, times were difficult, the majority of the Jewish intelligentsia had been removed, leading lights like Zelenka, Schulhoff, and others, exterminated by Nazi occupiers, under Reinhard Heydrich. I happened upon this while searching for something else - here is a Brüder Rachmann paper label (on a vase I purchased on eBay)

Nice find, can you add a view of the vase, ideally as a separate thread. I am convinced that they were a glassworks, metalworks and decorators - which is 'against' the wind, but I have found enough evidence - but it still needs confirmation.
