Title: Edinburgh Paperweight
Post by: paperweights on March 04, 2008, 03:21:33 AM
Can anyone provide the correct name and year for the Edinburgh paperweight shown in links below?

It is about 3 1/8" in diameter.  Signed E in cane and engraved Edinburgh 46/100 on the base.

Amethyst flash overlay with an amber swirl ground.  Someone pulled out all stops when making this.

Allan

You will have already checked Bob Hall's "Scottish Paperweight" book (as you stock it!) so will be aware that this weight is not shown in the 1986 catalogue extract that he shows in the book.  As Edinburgh sold "Caithness" weights for 1986 to 1987 then the implication is that this must be a 1987.  I have never seen the catalogue for that year.
On the other site - there was much input by Allan Scott (orb) to other questions about Edinburgh weights. He also refers to "two sets of editions". I recall that he was to try and get hold of the catalogues from Caithness but obviously that window of opportunity seems to have gone.

I made sure that Perth Museum and Caithness discussed the archives, unless they got sold off they could be at the museum now. Will check when I have some time.

Frank

Thanks for that. I recalled that something was discussed about the archives when the factory museum closed and the weights were sold off, but I couldn't remember what that was and whether anything had happened.

The problem with Edinburgh crystal Caithnesses is that apart from the copy brochure in Bob's book, there is no other listing or description easily available anywhere else. They did insert certificates with the weights - but how many of them do not get mislaid??   I think this is something that may be I could research in the future

Someone did send me some scans but too small to use on SG, hoping to get better ones. I will go and look them up to see what was included there.

It is the 1986 catalogue and it is in there Amethyst Whorl, limited to 100 pieces and that weight was overstamped Edition Completed.

Would you consider sending photos for adding to Scotland's Glass please, front, top, base, best view and uncompressed on a light background please. I will make it a priority to get that catalogue contents up, as despite the small size of the images they are clearly good enough to identify as in this case :-)

Thanks Frank,

I'll get you some pictures.  When you say uncompressed... that means a TIFF file which is quite large (6 MB per picture).  Normally my pictures are jpg format.  Tell me what format you want and what size you want the file to be and I'll try to comply.

Was there a price in the catalog?  Originally I intended to sell this, but after studying it more and realizing what it was, I may keep it in my collection.

Definitely a keeper  ;D must be quite hard to find.

Jpeg is fine, just set to highest quality and not resaved. I store pictures in the best quality and make copies in other sizes so that when larger images become the norm I can easily (relatively  ;) ) upgrade the site. Thanks.
