Title: Mod "Panton" Bowl Set - Ideas?
Post by: horochar on August 03, 2006, 01:24:59 AM
I use these terms in jest, supposing that's how they'd be described on eBay.   "Eames era"? Anyhow, these bowls are hand blown from thin glass.  I have to assume they're from the late 1960s to mid 1970s, although I haven't a clue as to maker or country of origin.  Can anybody help me?
Thanks,
Charles.

Oh they're much more recent than that, there's plenty of these around on all markets here. No idea who made these bowls, though. Factory produced in huge numbers, I'm afraid - as you might have guessed from the rim finish.

Thanks for the replies.  Oh well. Luckily, I only paid $5 for the set.  Not to nit pick, but by "more recent" are we saying 1980s, 1990s or 2000s?  Brand new?  For fun, take a look at my "Super Bowl," a pottery salad bowl on wooden base designed in 1970 by Michael Lax and produced for short time by Iroquois China.  I think the resemblance with the glass bowls is not coincidental.

FAB - love it!  That would be great used with a pair of Arne Jacobsen Cylinda-Line Stelton stainless steel salad servers  :D

:D :D :D

I'm sure Domnall O'Brien designed bowls similar in shape to these for Caithness, in the '60's/'70's. I think space travel was the inspiration, with the lunar landings at that time. I believe it has since become a fairly classic design, as these bowls testify, for reproducing.

It's not an uncommon shape in glass. I've seen another, not dissimilar, bowl by Kumela. And Caithness have something loosely similar in their pattern backlog.

It also pops up in plastic every now and then - I think Dana-Plast did a kitchenware range of them in the 70s.

Edit: Sue beat me on the Caithness front.  :D

Also TV's...

*sigh* One day I will own a JVC Videosphere. And dangle it from the ceiling, which is how the good lord intended globe-shaped televisions to be viewed.

If you have the space, my sister's in-laws had one - unbelievable space waster but certainly impressive - although it might lead to eye strain as the screen was only about 24"

I don't think eye-strain would be much of a worry - I barely watch TV as it is, nevermind black and white TV. I just love them for their impact value. That's first-impression impact, not dent-in-the-floor-when-it-brings-the-ceiling-down impact....

Although I do remember once finding a company online who take broken Videospheres and refurbish them with colour screens. It's either that or opt for a Phillips Discoverer. I'm still kicking myself for not having the cash on me when I spotted one complete with original remote at the end of a fair for £35.

I'd best be quiet now, other otherwise I'll end up relegated to the Cafe.
