Title: Just picked this up on Ebay!
Post by: tam bam on December 23, 2009, 01:24:20 AM
Hi everyone and Merry Christmas!  I was doing some Christmas shopping for myself tonite and played a little Santa for myself and found these lovely plates!  What do you think?  I hope Ejean9 will appreciate them since they seem to come in their original box.  The box is not as fancy as hers but at least it is a box.  I thought that is still hard to come by these days.  Anyway, I thought I would share.

Lovely plates! I read this just after posting about Archimede Seguso signatures. The label is from the 80's, so it's definitely genuine Archimdede Seguso. I wonder if they added the signature because it was bought in Murano.

It's a good week to A Seguso. I bought a little dresser jar advertised as B & T despite its Seguso label. Also, got a couple of nice little AeM bowls, and an FT bird. Then I spoilt it all by buying a Chinese vase advertised as Murano but which the one fuzzy picture convinced me was Czech. At least postage was low and I only paid $8.00 for it.

Enjoy Christmas with your new plates.

Thanks David,

I'll be honest.  I am not the best in the world with Archimede Seguso pieces but I thought for the price I could afford to take the hit if they turned out to be fakes.  I knew the labels looked 80's as well and the box looked authentic enough but I'll have to do more research into the sigs when they come in.  I saw these plates about a year ago on Ebay and were going to buy them but didn't and when I thought about it again they were gone.  I thought someone else had bought them (they were offered by the same people on Ebay).  I told myself If I ever saw them again I am going to snatch them but I thought they were long gone because that was when the economy was really hurting and everyone was buying Seguso at really low prices but last night was my chance.

Rats!  I just received the Archimede Seguso plates today and the seller put peanuts in the shipping box but did not secure the plates inside the Seguso box so they were floppying around and the blue plate is shattered beyond repair.  It was really sad because as it turnes out yes, they are the real thing!  These plates came from the Archimede Seguso furnace bacause it hase the pamplet like Ejean9 has in it and everything! :hiclp:  I was thrilled to see it but sad to see the mess but at least the yellow plate is salvaged so not all is lost.  I wish the other one was also still in one piece but I guess you can't win them all.

Nothing worse than the sound of broken glass. I lost a shipment of big birds when I was moving. The box had taken quite a blow and was accordion like on both ends. I wrapped them carefully, but unfortunately not well enough. I know how you are feeling. I hope the seller makes it right with you.

Hey Glasshunter,

You wouldn't by chance be interested in selling one of the boxed sets would you?  If so let me know.  I sure do like the sets and would like to have another if possible if you are interested let me know.   Click on my name and e-mail me if you are interested.

Sorry to hear about the broken plate. It seems so avoidable. I hope you get your money back and are successfu in getting a replacement.

Thanks David.  I did get everything worked out with the seller so everything is A-OK on that end but I just hate that a perfectly good Seguso piece is shattered beyond repair in the mean time.  I will keep my eyes peeled for a replacement dish.  That is the risk you take when you mail order though.  Some sellers just don't think when they pack glass.

Hi David your quote 'Then I spoilt it all by buying a Chinese vase advertised as Murano but which the one fuzzy picture convinced me was Czech.'

Now I am a suspicious bar steward by design and I have been caught on this ruse or more like 'I don't really know what I am doing' poor photo con. I suspect the worst, as there seems to be more of these poor photo's in a time when excellent camera's cost little.

Tam Bam - Any loss of an Archimede Seguso piece impoverishes us all.

'I don't really know what I am doing' poor photo con. I suspect the worst, as there seems to be more of these poor photo's in a time when excellent camera's cost little.

I just follow the idea that if they can't operate a camera to take a good picture then I have to question their ability to describe glass, or they are pulling a con.... and in either case I usually pass..If I buy it, it has to be very cheap and I buy it expecting the worst, and then I never get disappointed.....  and although a couple of times I got the garbage I expected to get, one other time I got a real gem of a piece for about $12.00 with shipping.....  and my suspicions were confirmed, twice it was a con, and one time they were absolutely clueless about the piece of glass......

Some sellers just don't think when they pack glass.

I generally take that a little further, and just figure, some sellers don't think.... it does not matter what about...     ;D   ;D

Totally agree Craig I was going to go on about this but you have done a better job that I could have in describing this situation.

If you have over 100 in your ebay profile and you cant take a clear photo to bless yourself, something is bit questionable.

The other thing I am interested in is the apparent reductions in the amount of description when the sellers sells lots of glass. I guess this is to reduce the number of 'you said ....' sale cancellations.

The less you say, the less you are accountable for.....  Difficult to file a SNAD when the pictures are there and there is little text....  even if the pictures are bad....  You can't really say that "The listing said yadayadayadayada......."

I just figure that no matter how ebay tries to "protect" a buyer, there is always a group of scammers a step ahead of them....

In defence of this seller, she was just starting on eBay and this was the only piece of glass she's sold. I did buy it for $8.00 and the shipping she quoted was going to end in her getting something like $3.00 for the vase. To an untrained eye the piece looks OK; it's when you look at the base that it becomes clear. Craig as usual makes excellent sense. However, there's  a residual bit of a gambler in me. I quite like taking chances, especially for under $15.00, but I do look over the seller's feedback and what has been sold recently before committing myself.

I'll put a picture of my shame on if anyone's interested. I suppose my feelings are slightly warped by the fact that I got an FT bird, two AVeM bowls, and a lovely little Archimede Seguso piece for not much about the same time. They're not great glass but solid. I'll put pictures of them on, too, perhaps later tonight. And the major triumph: they all arrived unblemished!

Please do David - I got a bullicante/aventurine ashtray for Christmas and not sure what the hell it is, will put it on tomorrow. At the moment I am getting 'the look' which says it is time I jumped on the mower.

Final two: Fratelli Toso pinwheel bowl, I think, and, finally, my eternal shame. Please be kind to me at this time of peace and goodwill. At least don't LOL.

There are some nice pieces there.....

As far as the matte bottom piece, the irregularity of the shape of the amber in the "petals" at the top would have stopped me.....

Great Murano purchases, David. You're normally a very savvy buyer, so I think you can forgive the Chinese vase. I have a F'lli Toso bird that is shaped like yours, but is on a short pedestal. I often see the AVeM bowls listed as Seguso online. It is nice to have an attribution for them finally.

David - Alison has bought a perfume bottle that seems to match your Seguso lidded bowl. If you ever want to sell it can I have first dibs?

Will put a picture up later and a new thread with my Christmas present!

Happy New Year to you and all on the site.

Here is Alison's perfume bottle. She wasn't that keen but I talked her into it and she loves it. :chky:

60mm of glass and 85mm top of spray. Should have put a bottom shot but it does have Seguso label.

All:

Thanks for the comments, which will allow me to enter the New Year without too much damage to my ego.

Christine: I just love matte bottoms. (The book isn't here yet, but the mail is ridiculous right now.)

Ardy: Your perfume looks very similar. Unfortunately, soon as my wife saw the bowl she said, "It's mine!" I'm not very good at selling anyhow.

Anita: These are first AVeM that I am aware of that I've seen like this, but there must be more. I've also a very similar bowl that has a Seguso label, and a not too dissimilar one that has the Venini marking. I suspect Venini started the trend and others picked it up. And I think Galliano Ferro did a later version.

Craig: I'll look at the petals more carefully from now on.

BTW, the pinwheel was $38, all the others significantly less. There are still some OK pieces out there. Now if I could find a Fuga piece for a similalry low price....

David, In your defense, I have no idea if the images you bought it from were good enough to tell...  I am also a bit of a gambler, and will take the chance if it is cheap enough.....

As of late, I generally find myself looking more closely at execution styles with all of the better Chinese glass showing up now..... They seem to be getting better at the overall look of a piece, but they still seem, in most cases, to lack the finesse for the small details that will help determine the origin..

Your ego should have suffered no damage.....  it was a gamble, and sometimes they pay off, and sometimes they don't. Next time it does you can display the winner next to, shall we say the "not winner".  Just consider it the subject of a closeup study on Chinese technique!!!!

I always figure... Nothing ventured..... nothing gained.....

Thanks, Craig. I'm really OK with the Chinese glass for all the reasons you suggest and more. I'm better at broadcasting self-effacement than I am at believing it.

David - I guessed that would be the case and I am likewise a reluctant - read non existent seller of good glass.  Luckily my grand failures are kept as flower pots or if not capable of this function they are put into a box that I will sell at some stage.

I really love your FT pinwheel bowl and I count myself lucky that I generally collect only one maker. The complexity of collecting goes very complex very quickly with the more makers you are looking for.

As 2009 is nearly over for me 4.5 hours to go and we have a good bottle of sparkling red in the fridge. Lets all drink a toast to what has been a good 2009 and hopefully a better 2010?

David,

You have some really nice pieces there.  Congrats!!!  I really like the lided jar.  I am glad to see the bowls have labels as well.  How interesting.  I will never look at those type of bowls the same way ever again.  I just love A.Ve.M.  That company was great because they were full of surprises or at least they surprise me all the time.  Hopefully you will find that Fuga piece one day for really cheap. Thanks for sharing your finds with us.
