Title: Smokey grey Scandi? vase... - ID = Wedgwood
Post by: Anne on January 13, 2006, 02:19:18 AM
This is another recent vase I cannot identify. It is quite heavy for its size, smoky grey, I suspect it's Scandinavian but I can't find any references to it. Does anyone recognise it please?

Hi Anne,
Might well be Wedgwood, probably a Thrower design. Just based on colour alone. At that period would have carried a plastic Wedgwood label, rather than etched mark.
Regards,
Marcus

Thanks Marcus, I hadn't considered Wedgwood as a possibility. I'll see what I can find. :)
Title: Update on smokey vase...

Another one to follow up... I found an almost identical vase - same height, base diameter, neck diameter, colour. Small differences are: the second one has optical ribbing and an etched Wedgwood label, and weighs 675g. The original one weighs 710g.

Picture of them side by side for comparison (click thumbnail for larger image):

Marcus, do you think they are from the same maker?

Hi Anne,
I think it is highly likely these are probably from the same factory, though not the same "chair".
regards,
Marcus

Hi Anne,
See these two current eBay listings:
7385349883
7385847175

which appear to show two different, but labelled, variants of a Frank Thrower "Ming" vase.

Regards,

Marcus

Thanks Marcus, they are really useful to see. They look the same variants as my two, except that both mine are the same height. It looks like the optic ribbed one was made in two sizes - 11 cm and 17 cm. Interesting that the plain one on eBay is etched and mine isn't, whereas the ribbed one on eBay is not etched and mine is. I wonder why this variation in marking items? (Other than to confuse folks like me!   )

Merely date of production. Etched is earlier than plastic labelling.
One of the other Wedgwood threads has a date, I think, when etching was abandoned.

Marcus

OK, that makes sense. I'll go search for the other thread and have a read through. Thanks again Marcus. :)
