Title: Is it or is it not a Seguso whale
Post by: carolglass on July 01, 2008, 12:44:30 PM
I have recently purchased this delightful whale and the seller listed it as unsigned Archimede Seguso, c 1950's, your opinions please. A rasberry type blush to the front and clear from there to its tail, just over 15 cm long and 9 cm high, with a  polished base. TIA Carol

It is really difficult to tell if it is A. Seguso or not. They did so many pieces posed in so many positions that without a signature or label, it is difficult to attribute an animal with any degree of certainty. It looks like it could easily be made by them.

Could it be by Licio Zanetti?  It certainly reminds me (the colour and the way it's graduated) of a Licio Zanetti signed fish I once owned.

The Licio Zanetti pieces I have seen or owned have been signed. Does anyone know if all of his designs are signed?

I have a signed Licio Zanetti whale that looks very similar to this piece. I will upload pictures later.

I cannot help with the identification but just wanted to say what a nice whale.  I love the color.

Thanks for the pictures Nemmie- I will have to wait until I return to NZ to handle my whale to compare with yours BUT the similarities are compelling for a Zanetti attribution don't you think?  My exile is nearly over!! :rah:
Tam bam and TXSilver, thanks also for your comments- most welcome.

I am just browsing here, and I know nothing about items like these. However, it seems to me that the tail fluke of Nemmie's whale is added as separate pieces. Carol's whale appears to have a fluke that is pulled out of the body glass. Also, the eyes appear to be of different style and size and the main body of Carol's looks to be larger, in proportion to its tail section, than Nemmie's.

Does that help or not? Like I said, I am just browsing.

You have a great eye for detail, Kevin. At first glance the whales look very similar. I didn't notice the difference in the tail of the two. Nemmie's whale eye looks like it has a ring -- maybe a transparent murrine -- that Carol's whale doesn't have.
